316L Stainless is the quiet standard of watch cases: a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing alloy that shrugs off seawater and daily wear. Here is why nearly everyone uses it.

316L Stainless is the most commonly used alloy in the watch industry, and for good reason. Its composition runs roughly 16-18 percent chromium, 10-14 percent nickel and 2-3 percent molybdenum, while the "L" in the name signals low carbon, capped at 0.03 percent. That low carbon matters: it limits carbide precipitation around welds, which improves both corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The molybdenum content is what earns 316L its marine-grade reputation, fending off pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich settings like seawater. It is meaningfully tougher against corrosion than the older 304 grade, which is why it became the default from budget Seikos to serious Swiss makers.

Real examples show how wide a range this single alloy covers. Tudor cases its watches in 316L, the Black Bay 58 included; the most affordable steel Fifty-Eight starts around £3,100, climbing to the £3,200 to £4,000 band on a bracelet and in 2025 configurations. Omega uses 316L across many references, with the entry Speedmaster, a 38mm steel automatic, retailing near £4,000 new. At the other end, the Seiko 5 Sports SKX line (references like the SSK033 and SSK035) puts the same 316L case on your wrist for around £395. The point is that this alloy underpins both a budget tool watch and a four-figure Swiss chronometer.

The buying calculus is straightforward. 316L is easy to machine and polish, widely available and relatively cost-effective, but it will not hold quite the bright mirror finish that 904L can over time. Here is the part most people miss: the two are close in hardness, so 316L resists day-to-day scratching just as well in practice, and the difference is invisible in normal wear. If you want a tool watch, a diver or a single daily companion, 316L is more than enough. The 904L premium is largely about polish aesthetics and marketing, not a dramatic gap in durability.

One last note for sensitive wrists: 316L holds roughly 10-14 percent nickel, but it is tightly bound in the austenitic matrix, and passivation forms a chromium-oxide layer that limits nickel-ion release. That is why it is generally considered hypoallergenic. Still, studies suggest 5-10 percent of nickel-sensitive wearers can react, so if your allergy is severe, a titanium or ceramic case is the safer call.
