Carbon TPT, short for Thin Ply Technology, is a composite patented and produced by North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT), a Swiss firm. It began life in racing-yacht sails, then migrated to Formula 1 chassis and aeronautics before reaching watchmaking. A case starts as hundreds of carbon layers, each no thicker than 30 microns, soaked in resin and rotated 45 degrees relative to the layer beneath it. The stack cures at 120 degrees Celsius under 6 bar of pressure, then a CNC machine carves a case from the solid block at Richard Mille's ProArt factory. Because the cutter slices through that layered structure at varying depths, the surface takes on a wood-grain, almost Damascus-steel ripple, and no two cases ever look quite the same.
Richard Mille was the first to bring NTPT carbon into watches, debuting it on the RM 011 before discontinuing that reference in 2016 in favour of the RM 11-03. The RM 35-02 Rafael Nadal arrived in either black Carbon TPT or a vivid red Quartz TPT with white accents, with the Carbon TPT version retailing around £160,000 to £190,000. On the secondary market, RM 11-03 Carbon TPT examples have listed near £250,000, while an older RM 011 in NTPT carbon surfaced around £300,000. References like the RM 33-03, the RM 43-01, and a Gold Carbon TPT that alternates carbon with thin gold leaf round out the family.
The single most important thing to understand before chasing this material is that Carbon TPT is, in practice, a Richard Mille signature. The NTPT relationship is a co-development partnership rather than a broad licence, so you will not find this exact grain on other marques. Roger Dubuis Excalibur and Hublot Big Bang offer carbon cases, but those are different composites, not NTPT Carbon TPT. As a buyer, study how the grain runs across the case, whether the bezel and band tones match, and how well the matte finish hides daily micro-scratches. The payoff is real: it wears feather-light and shrugs off the hairlines that plague polished steel.
Understanding Carbon TPT also means knowing its sibling, Quartz TPT. That version uses white quartz fibre, takes dye well, and is hypoallergenic and UV resistant; the red Quartz TPT on the RM 35-02 reportedly withstands accelerations up to 5,000 g. Both share the same layered logic, differing only in fibre type and colour. Carbon TPT suits the collector who wants a dark, graphite-toned, overtly technical look and refuses to carry the weight of metal on the wrist.
