DLC on Steel describes a stainless steel case coated with diamond-like carbon, an amorphous carbon film laid down only a few microns thick. Thin as it is, the surface can reach roughly 8,000 to 9,000 HV on the Vickers scale, which is two to three times harder than ordinary PVD and far beyond bare 316L steel. The look runs from deep black to anthracite, usually matte or satin, and because DLC marries diamond hardness with graphite-like lubricity, the surface stays both tough and smooth. It is applied by PVD deposition or by PACVD, so PVD names the process while DLC names a specific coating type. That distinction trips up a lot of buyers, because a watch can be PVD-coated without being true DLC.
Real models make the picture concrete. The Sinn U1 S takes a German submarine steel case, fully tegiments it, then adds an all-over black hard coating; it is rated to 1,000m and DNV certified, with the tegimenting alone bringing the surface to around 1,200 HV before the coating goes on top. Bremont pairs its DLC with an in-house B-EBE2000 hardening treatment and hand-assembles the cases in Henley-on-Thames. Bell & Ross offers Black Steel versions of the BR 03 and BR-05. The Tudor Black Bay Dark, ref. 79230DK, launched in 2016 at about £3,500, is now discontinued and trades pre-owned roughly between £1,800 and £2,900; note that Tudor calls its finish PVD rather than DLC, a reminder that black steel is not always DLC. At the accessible end, a black PVD Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical starts around £440.
When you shop, first confirm whether the coating is genuinely DLC or a softer PVD or IP-black. If the maker will not put the words DLC or diamond-like carbon in writing, stay sceptical. Whether the steel substrate is hardened underneath, by tegimenting or B-EBE2000, directly affects how well the coating bonds and how long it survives. DLC is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof: ceramic or diamond can still mark it, and case edges and high points can wear through to bright steel over years of daily knocks. That makes DLC on steel a good fit for someone who wants a stealthy matte look, wears a watch hard, and accepts that the coating may eventually rub through in places. For anyone with a nickel sensitivity, DLC being hypoallergenic is a quiet bonus.
Two nuances are worth holding onto. First, DLC cannot be polished out; once it wears, the only true fix is a full recoat, which usually means sending the watch back, whereas bare steel just buffs clean. Second, do not conflate DLC on titanium with DLC on steel: steel gives you a heavier, stiffer base, so you get more mass and a more rigid feel under the coating. If lightness is the priority, look at titanium-based versions; if you want heft and a classic on-wrist balance, steel-based DLC is the sensible choice.
