Carbon-Reinforced Resin is, put plainly, a composite that bonds carbon fibre to an epoxy resin, then presses and moulds it under heat into a case structure. Casio brought it into the mainstream with the Carbon Core Guard, unveiled at Baselworld 2019. The difference from ordinary resin is real and measurable: carbon fibre adds a very high strength-to-volume ratio, low thermal expansion and good chemical tolerance, so the case can be made thinner while staying rigid enough to shield the module from shock. It also let Casio drop the bulky button guards that defined older G-Shocks.
The model everyone reaches for here is the GA-2100, the 2019 piece collectors nicknamed the 'CasiOak'. With its octagonal bezel, an 11.8mm-thick case, roughly 51 grams on the wrist and 200m water resistance, it sells for around £80. The GA-B2100 adds Tough Solar and Bluetooth at roughly £120. Step up and the GWG-2000 Mudmaster pairs a forged-carbon bezel with a Carbon Core Guard case, Triple Sensor and Tough Solar at about £640, while the GWR-B1000 Gravitymaster uses a carbon monocoque that fuses case and caseback into one piece, also near £640.
When shopping, separate two things: whether the whole case uses Carbon Core Guard, or only the bezel is forged carbon. A GA-2100 runs carbon-reinforced resin in the inner case with a plain resin outer bezel; the GWG-2000 carries both. This category suits anyone who wants featherweight comfort and everyday toughness, who finds steel bracelets tiring, and who lives in sport or outdoor watches. The trade-off is feel: the material never gives the dense, expensive tap of metal, and it isn't built to chase a polished luxury look.
There is range within the niche. The GA-2000 sits near 64 grams, the GA-2200 around 57, and the GG-B100 Mudmaster, with its carbon bezel and Quad Sensor, lands near 92 grams. So the same material family spans the slim, minimal CasiOak right up to fully kitted Master of G tools. Your choice really comes down to how much sensor hardware and solar you actually want.
