Standard Resin

Standard resin is the backbone case material of G-Shock and classic Casio digitals: a glass-fibre-reinforced nylon compound that is light, flexes to absorb impact, and delivers genuinely tough wear for very little money.

Standard resin is the case material most collectors first meet through Casio, and above all through G-Shock. Technically it is a glass-fibre-reinforced nylon engineering plastic, not raw plastic but a composite stiffened with chopped glass fibres for rigidity and dimensional stability. Its real virtue in watchmaking is that, unlike steel, it absorbs shock by flexing. Much of a G-Shock's famed impact resistance actually comes from resin parts inside the case bending to soak up energy. Add light weight, cheap mass production and reasonable scratch tolerance, and you understand why standard resin has been a fixture for decades.

The purest example is the Casio F-91W, effectively unchanged since 1989: a 33mm resin case and strap that sells for roughly £12 to £16 and punches far above its price. On the G-Shock side, the classic square DW-5600E-1V lists around £80 in the UK, while the DW-5600UE-1 was revised upward in 2025 when it gained the newer LED module. The round DW-6900, with its triple-graph display and oversized resin bezel, is the other standard resin staple and usually sits not far behind. That spread tells you exactly which part of the market standard resin serves.

When buying, keep standard resin distinct from carbon-reinforced resin, the Carbon Core Guard construction used on the slim GA-2100 Casioak, which keeps the same nylon matrix but swaps glass fibre for graphite fibre: stiffer and lighter, but pricier. Standard resin suits anyone who wants a watch to knock around in daily life, ignore in the rain, and not mourn if it scuffs. Its one honest weakness is time. Over years resin can harden and grow brittle, and the oils inside can migrate to the surface and leave a sticky film, what collectors call resin rot. Do not expect it to outlast a steel case across generations.

More recently Casio has begun moulding standard resin from bio-based stock, derived from castor seeds and corn, used on some DW-5600-based models and the GBD-H2000 G-Shock MOVE, and also reconstitutes factory scrap resin rather than discarding it. The look and feel are identical to conventional standard resin; only the feedstock changes. For anyone shopping the category today, that means the choices are both broader and a little greener than they were a few years ago.
