Coloured Ceramic covers high-tech ceramic cases that go beyond black and white into blue, green, brown and bolder tones. The crucial thing to understand is that the colour is not a coating. Zirconium oxide powder is mixed with pigment and sintered at roughly 1,500 degrees Celsius, so the colour runs all the way through the material. Scratch the surface and you will not find a different colour underneath, and it will not fade under UV after years on the wrist. On the Vickers scale ceramic sits around 1,200 to 2,000 HV against about 200 HV for steel, which makes it nearly immune to everyday marks. Bright reds are genuinely hard, because organic pigments burn at that temperature, which is why coloured ceramic stayed mostly in blues, greens and greys for a long time.
The real-world spread is wide. Rado is the pioneer here: the True Thinline Colours line came in brown, dark blue, grey and green ceramic and usually runs between £1,700 and £2,000, while the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic in blue or green sits near £3,100, with the navy chronograph closer to £5,200. IWC opened with the white Lake Tahoe, then moved into dark green with the Woodland (ref. IW389106, around £10,000, calibre 69380), and a Pantone-developed light blue Miramar chronograph at roughly £11,100, limited to 1,000 pieces. At the top end, Hublot launched the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic, billed as the first multicolour ceramic, using a patented sintering process, at about £26,000 in a run of 20; Audemars Piguet has paired a black ceramic Royal Oak Offshore case with a green ceramic bezel, crown and pushers.
When buying, look first at colour consistency and finishing: good coloured ceramic reads as a single, even tone whether matte or polished, with no blotches or streaks. The lightness is a real plus, but remember that ceramic is hard and brittle at once; a sharp knock against concrete can chip a corner, and unlike steel you cannot polish it out, the part has to be replaced. Coloured cases cost more than black or white because pigment stability and reject rates make them harder to produce. This material suits the buyer who dislikes the cold feel of steel, reacts to metal, or simply wants a watch that looks the same in a decade.
It helps to separate the sub-types. Rado's plasma ceramic is technically not pigmented at all; white ceramic is treated with gases activated at about 20,000 degrees, which turn it a metallic platinum-grey, a different look from true pigmented colour. Hybrid alloys like Hublot's Magic Gold fuse ceramic with gold. If you want pure coloured ceramic, confirm the whole case is pigmented, not just a bezel insert over a steel or titanium body.
