Seiko SKA791P1, 43mm, Green Dial, Brown Leather Strap

Seiko's Kinetic technology offers a distinct ownership experience, converting the wearer's motion into electrical energy. This particular model houses the 5M82 calibre, which provides a six month power reserve on a full charge, a status easily checked via the pusher at two o'clock. The movement combines quartz accuracy with a self-charging rotor that recharges as you wear it, no battery changes required.

The case measures about 42.6mm in stainless steel, giving it a modern sports-watch presence on the wrist. Its dial presents a strong forest green colour proposition, with large Arabic numerals and luminous hands ensuring legibility in varied conditions. A framed date window sits cleanly at the three o'clock position, maintaining the dial's functional balance.

Protecting the dial is Seiko's proprietary Hardlex crystal, offering notable scratch and impact resistance for daily activities. The watch is rated for 100 metres of water resistance, suitable for surface swimming, and is paired with a rugged brown leather strap with contrast stitching that complements its utilitarian aesthetic.

This watch is for the collector who appreciates innovative quartz technology but prefers the interactive feel of a mechanical piece. The Seiko Kinetic system, specifically the 5M82 calibre inside, delivers quartz accuracy without routine battery changes by storing up to six months of power. It is a practical choice for someone who wants a reliable grab-and-go watch that still has a story to tell about its engineering.

The standout feature is the movement's user interaction. Unlike a solar watch, a Kinetic movement uses an oscillating rotor like an automatic's to generate power, but timekeeping is still quartz-precise, the seconds hand sweeps in quartz steps rather than a true mechanical glide. The pusher at two o'clock is not for a chronograph; it advances the second hand to display the current power reserve, a functional detail that directly connects the wearer to the watch's energy state. The deep green dial on this SKA791P1 reference is another strong point, giving it a distinct personality.

The primary tradeoff at this price point is the crystal material. Seiko uses its own Hardlex mineral glass, which is tougher against impacts than basic mineral crystal but more prone to scratching than the sapphire found on more expensive watches. Additionally, while the 100-metre water resistance is adequate for daily wear and swimming, the push-pull crown means it is not a dedicated dive watch and requires care around water.

For its intended purpose as a durable, everyday Kinetic sports watch, this Seiko delivers considerable value. The stainless steel case construction is solid, and the 22mm lug width allows for easy strap changes if the owner wishes to experiment. If you can look past the mineral crystal and want a watch with a unique, self-sustaining movement, this model is an excellent entry into Seiko's world of alternative power sources.
