British Made is an origin label describing watches designed or built in Britain, though in practice the degree varies sharply by maker. The historical roots run deep: Thomas Tompion is regarded as the father of English clockmaking, Thomas Mudge devised the lever escapement around 1755, and John Harrison cracked the longitude problem with the marine chronometer. That thread reached its modern high point with George Daniels, whose co-axial escapement, conceived in 1974 and patented in 1980, was the only new escapement to reach mass production since the lever, later adopted by Omega.
Today the category lives at two extremes. At the purest end, Daniels's protege Roger W. Smith builds every component by hand on the Isle of Man, turning out roughly 10 to 12 watches a year; his Series 2 was the first made entirely in-house, retailed near £80,000 in 18k gold in 2015, and now trades on the secondary market from around £320,000 to over £800,000. Charles Frodsham makes its Double Impulse Chronometer, using the oil-free Daniels Double Impulse escapement, almost entirely in-house with about seven watchmakers, priced at £68,500 in steel and higher in gold. At the accessible end sits Bremont, building at its Henley-on-Thames facility, The Wing, with the 2024 Terra Nova field watch and the Supermarine 300M landing roughly £2,950 to £5,000.
When buying, mind the category's grey areas. Christopher Ward designs in Britain but assembles in Biel, Switzerland, so British-designed is more honest than British-made; that said, its in-house calibres like the SH21, FS01 and CW-003 show real engineering, and the C1 Bel Canto at roughly £3,300 or the C12 Loco near £3,795 deliver serious value. Smith and Frodsham suit the collector or investor, Bremont the buyer wanting a wearable British mechanical, and Christopher Ward the value-minded enthusiast.
The trade-offs are clear: genuine British hand-craft carries rarity and price, while Swiss-assembled brands buy you accessibility. Newer names such as Garrick, Fears and Studio Underd0g fill the middle, with the Fears Brunswick 38 around £3,000 to £3,500 and Studio Underd0g starting in the low hundreds. Whatever the tier, ask the maker to be transparent about the line between designed, assembled and fully made in Britain.
