How we calculate this
We turned the most common advice from watch forums into one simple rule you can check. Treat the result as a starting point, not a hard limit.
| Wrist | Men's range | Max lug to lug |
|---|---|---|
| 15 cm (5.9 in) | 35-37 mm | 44 mm |
| 16.5 cm (6.5 in) | 38-40 mm | 48 mm |
| 18 cm (7.1 in) | 41-43 mm | 52 mm |
| 19.5 cm (7.7 in) | 44-46 mm | 57 mm |
For women's watches the range is 3 mm smaller on the same wrist.

How to measure your wrist
- Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around your wrist, just above the wrist bone where a watch sits.
- Mark where the end meets the strip. Keep it snug, not tight.
- Lay it flat and measure from the end to your mark with a ruler. That length is your wrist circumference.
Questions people ask
What size watch fits a 16.5 cm wrist?
Most people with a 16.5 cm (6.5 inch) wrist wear a 38 to 40 mm case well. Keep the lug to lug length under about 48 mm so the lugs do not hang past the edge of your wrist.
Is 42 mm too big for an 18 cm wrist?
No. An 18 cm (7.1 inch) wrist suits roughly 41 to 43 mm, so 42 mm sits in the middle. Keep the lug to lug length under about 52 mm.
What matters more, diameter or lug to lug?
Lug to lug. Two 40 mm watches can wear very differently if one has longer lugs. If the lugs pass the flat top of your wrist, the watch looks too big.
What size watch fits a woman with a 15 cm wrist?
With a 15 cm (5.9 inch) wrist, 32 to 34 mm is a comfortable range for most women's watches. 36 mm works if you like a bolder look.
How do I measure lug to lug?
Measure from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs, straight through the centre of the case. Many brands list it in the specifications.
