Description
Released in 2023, this Mako variant answers the call for a more compact dive-style watch. The case measures a modern 39.9mm, offering a comfortable fit for a wider range of wrists without losing the model's tool-watch presence. Inside, the in-house Orient calibre F6722 provides reliable timekeeping with both hacking and hand-winding capabilities.
A deep blue dial provides a clean, legible backdrop for the luminous hands and indices, a signature of the Mako collection. Protecting the dial is a flat sapphire crystal, a significant upgrade that offers superior scratch resistance over mineral glass. The stainless steel case features a thoughtful mix of brushed and polished surfaces, lending it a visual depth that works well in many settings.
With a screw-down crown and solid caseback, the watch secures a water resistance rating across 200 metres, making it suitable for swimming and recreational surface water sports. It is paired with a stainless steel bracelet that follows the lines of the case lugs. The overall construction delivers a confident and capable daily wearing experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep can I go with the Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q14L?
The Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q14L offers 200 metres (20 bar) of water resistance, making it suitable for swimming, snorkelling, and recreational diving. While robust, it is not ISO 6425 certified for professional saturation diving, so it's best for surface and shallow underwater activities.
What movement powers the Orient Mako 40 and what is its power reserve?
This watch is powered by Orient's in-house Calibre F6722 automatic movement. This reliable Japanese movement features manual winding and hacking seconds, providing a practical power reserve of over 40 hours when fully wound.
Is the Orient Mako 40 resistant to magnetic fields?
The Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q14L, like most mechanical watches, has some inherent resistance to everyday magnetic fields. However, it does not feature specialised anti-magnetic technology like a silicon balance spring. Avoid prolonged exposure to strong magnetic sources to maintain accuracy.
What wrist size is suitable for the Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q14L?
With its 39.9mm case diameter and 46.5mm lug-to-lug span, the Orient Mako 40 is designed for balanced wrist presence. It generally fits a wide range of wrist sizes, typically comfortable for wrists from 6.5 to 8 inches (16.5 to 20 cm) in circumference.
How often should I service my Orient Mako 40 automatic watch?
For optimal performance and longevity, mechanical watches like the Orient Mako 40 should typically be serviced every 3 to 5 years. This includes cleaning, lubrication, and checking for water resistance, ensuring the Calibre F6722 continues to operate precisely.
How does the Orient Mako 40 compare to other dive watches in its price range?
The Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q14L stands out with its in-house Calibre F6722 movement, sapphire crystal, and robust stainless steel build at an accessible price point. It offers strong value against competitors by providing a classic dive watch aesthetic with reliable Japanese engineering.
Editor's take
The Mako 40 addresses enthusiasts who found classic 42mm Orient divers too large for their wrist. This sub-40mm iteration retains the core DNA while improving wearability, powered by the workhorse F6722 automatic calibre, a movement well-regarded for its durability and modern features.
Its standout feature is the combination of specifications in this smaller format. A highly scratch-resistant Sapphire Crystal is a notable inclusion, protecting a clean, legible dial. The 39.9mm Stainless Steel case is well-proportioned, and its 200 metres of water resistance gives it genuine capability for swimming and recreational water sports, though it is a dive-style watch and not an ISO 6425 certified diver.
The primary trade-off, common for watches in this segment, is the bracelet. While functional, the clasp and end-link construction do not match the quality of the watch head itself. Many will find it adequate, but others may see it as an ideal platform for a strap change or an aftermarket bracelet upgrade.
For a first mechanical watch or for a collector seeking a reliable daily piece, the reference RA-AC0Q14L is an excellent choice. It offers the appeal of a robust Japanese automatic movement and solid specifications without the bulk of its larger siblings. This blue dial version delivers a classic aesthetic that is hard to dispute.
