The tier sits one rung above entry pieces like the Tissot PRX or Hamilton Khaki Field, and most brands here offer either their own in-house calibre or a heavily upgraded Sellita or ETA base, often with COSC or METAS certification. Historically, this segment matured after 2010, driven by Tudor's return and the serious resurgence of Longines and Oris.
Concrete examples show how crowded the band has become, and how prices have crept up. The Tudor Black Bay 58 was overhauled for 2026, gaining a slimmer case, the in-house Kenissi MT5400 calibre with COSC and METAS Master Chronometer certification, and a roughly 65-hour power reserve; the five-link version now sits near £3,870 in the UK, still inside the band but barely. The Oris Aquis starts around £1,800 with its Sellita-based 733, the Calibre 400 versions sitting near £2,900. Longines Spirit and HydroConquest, alongside the Nomos Tangente, fill much of the band, with the HydroConquest automatic around £1,700. The Omega Aqua Terra and Grand Seiko Spring Drive typically sit above the band at full retail, slipping in only on the secondary market.
When buying, prioritise movement and build. An in-house calibre can raise service costs but rewards you with long-term character and value; an upgraded Sellita is easy to service and dependable. Look for a sapphire crystal, at least 100 metres of water resistance, a screw-down crown, and ideally COSC or METAS certification. This band suits both the buyer taking their first serious step and the experienced collector consolidating a pile of cheaper watches. One caveat: plenty of these trade well below retail used through an authorised pre-owned channel, so be patient.
There are clear sub-types within the tier. For a diver, look to the Black Bay or Aquis; for pilot character, the Longines Spirit or IWC's entry Pilot models; for clean, everyday dress, the Bauhaus language of the Nomos Tangente. Rather than stretching to the top of your budget, the smarter move is choosing the right piece within the band.
