Tourbillon
A tourbillon is a watch complication that mounts the entire escapement inside a rotating cage. Because the cage turns continuously, it averages out the effect of gravity on the watch's rate. It was devised for pocket watches and today is prized mainly as a showcase of hand-finishing and prestige.

The tourbillon is one of the most theatrical solutions in traditional watchmaking, traced to Abraham-Louis Breguet at the start of the nineteenth century. The logic is simple: in a pocket watch that sits in one position for long stretches, gravity always pulls the balance and its spring the same way, which skews the rate.
How it works
The answer is to keep the timing parts moving rather than holding them still.

Why it is a prestige feature today
A wristwatch is already on the move all day with your wrist, so vertical-position error matters far less than it did in a pocket watch. That makes the tourbillon more about showmanship than timekeeping: as a complication it asks for hand-finishing, fine bridges and a finely poised balance. It is also why no affordable Japanese watch carries a true one.
