Editor's take
The Orient Kamasu Mako III RA-AA0002L19B represents a compelling offering in the accessible dive watch segment, building on Orient's strong heritage of robust and reliable timepieces. This model is particularly appealing to those who seek a capable mechanical diver without venturing into premium price territories, making it a strong contender for daily wear and recreational diving.
Technically, the Kamasu Mako III stands out with its automatic movement, a hallmark of traditional watchmaking, ensuring a smooth sweep of the seconds hand and a connection to horological craftsmanship. The inclusion of a sapphire crystal is a significant upgrade at this price point, offering superior scratch resistance compared to mineral glass often found in competitors. Its 200m water resistance further solidifies its credentials as a genuine dive watch.
One potential drawback for some users might be the lack of an ISO 6425 certification, which, while not strictly necessary for recreational diving, is a mark of professional dive watches. Additionally, the proprietary nature of Orient's movements means that specialised servicing might be required, though their reliability is generally well-regarded.
Ultimately, the Kamasu Mako III is an excellent choice for individuals seeking a durable, attractive, and mechanically powered dive watch for everyday use and casual aquatic activities. For those prioritising a certified professional diver, alternatives like certain Seiko Prospex models might be considered, but for sheer value and classic design, the Kamasu remains a top pick.
