A Fitness Smartwatch is a sub-type that keeps the core smartwatch tricks, notifications, apps, payments, but shifts its center of gravity toward measuring sport. What separates it from an ordinary smartwatch is the depth of training data on one wrist: dual-frequency GPS, an optical heart-rate sensor, training load, VO2 max estimates, recovery time and detailed sleep analysis. The category matured in the 2010s through Garmin and Polar's running-focused GPS watches, and today it overlaps heavily with general-purpose smartwatches that now carry AMOLED screens, ECG and even satellite messaging.
The lineup is deep right now. The Garmin Forerunner 970 arrived in May 2025 at $749.99 with a 1.4-inch AMOLED, sapphire crystal, titanium bezel, the Elevate Gen 5 sensor and, for the first time on a Forerunner, ECG. The cheaper Forerunner 965 sits around $599.99 and routinely drops below $500. For triathletes and trail users, the Fenix 8 runs from $999 to $1,199 and pairs a 10 ATM water rating with EN13319 dive certification to 40 meters, plus a built-in flashlight. On the Apple side, the Series 11 starts at $399 and the Ultra 3 at $799, the latter landing in September 2025 with satellite connectivity and blood-pressure notifications. At the value end, the Coros Pace 3 is just $229 and around 30 grams, while the Polar Vantage V3 brings dual-frequency GPS at $599.90.
Start with your ecosystem. If you live on an iPhone, Apple Watch integration is hard to beat, but battery life is usually a single day. If you chase long runs, ultras or multi-day events, the week-plus battery of Garmin, Coros or Polar is the sounder pick. For GPS accuracy, look for multi-band models; for heart-rate fidelity, Polar and Coros tend to lead by skipping conveniences like contactless pay. Weight, the depth of running metrics and the quality of the training platform matter as much as the sticker price.
The category is not uniform. At one end sit slim trackers like the $159 Fitbit Charge 6, which offers built-in GPS and ECG but is not a full sport watch. In the middle, Wear OS devices like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 use the BioActive sensor for ECG and body composition. At the top are full training computers like the Forerunner 970, Fenix 8 and Vantage V3. Which one suits you depends less on what it measures than on how you plan to use the data.
