Bertucci A-2s Ballista 11085, 40mm, Black Dial, Nylon Strap

Built around a 40mm stainless steel case, the A-2s Ballista presents a balanced and contemporary profile for a field watch. The case features a non-reflective, bead-blasted finish that reinforces its utilitarian purpose, while the fixed lug bars provide a secure foundation for the one-piece strap, a signature of the brand's design philosophy.

The dial prioritises immediate legibility with its high-contrast black background and clean, white Arabic numerals. Protecting this display is a flat sapphire crystal, a material valued for its superior scratch resistance compared to the mineral glass often found at this price point. This thoughtful material choice ensures the watch remains readable even after hard use in demanding environments.

A reliable Japanese quartz movement powers the watch, delivering the accuracy and shock resistance essential for a tool watch. This choice minimises maintenance and guarantees performance when it matters most. Paired with a substantial 200-metre water resistance rating, the watch is well-equipped for more than just surface-level exposure to the elements. The Defender Drab nylon strap completes the package, offering comfort and durability.

The Bertucci A-2s Ballista is for the user who demands absolute reliability from a field watch without the ceremony of a mechanical movement. It is a purpose-built instrument where function dictates form, appealing to outdoorsmen, tradespeople, and anyone needing a timepiece that can withstand genuine abuse. The specific 11085 reference, with its classic black dial, is a direct and effective expression of this ethos.

Its standout characteristic is the specification list relative to its cost. The inclusion of a Sapphire Crystal is a significant value, offering a level of scratch resistance typically reserved for watches at a much higher tier. This is housed in a solid, bead-blasted Stainless Steel unibody case that feels substantial on the wrist and ready for serious work.

The primary trade-off is, by design, the movement. The Japanese quartz engine is a workhorse, providing excellent accuracy and durability against impacts. However, it will not satisfy the enthusiast looking for the intricate engineering and sweeping seconds hand of an automatic calibre. This is a conscious design choice that prioritises grab-and-go dependability over horological complexity.

For a daily-wear tool watch, the Ballista is a formidable contender. The practical 40mm diameter fits a wide range of wrists, and the overbuilt construction, including a screw-down crown and a 200m water resistance rating, provides genuine peace of mind. If you value resilience and legibility above all else, this watch is an intelligent and uncompromising choice.
