Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bulova Maquina 98A224 suitable for daily wear and swimming?
Yes, the Bulova Maquina 98A224 is designed for daily wear and offers 100 metres of water resistance. This makes it suitable for recreational swimming and snorkelling, but it is not recommended for diving activities.
What type of movement powers the Bulova Maquina watch?
The Bulova Maquina 98A224 is powered by a reliable Japanese automatic movement. This self-winding mechanism harnesses the motion of your wrist to keep the watch running, eliminating the need for batteries.
How does the Maquina 98A224 compare to other automatic watches in its price range?
The Bulova Maquina 98A224 stands out with its distinctive full skeleton dial and robust 46mm stainless steel case. While many watches offer automatic movements, the Maquina's visible mechanism and sapphire crystal provide a unique blend of style and durability.
What wrist size is suitable for the 46mm case of this Bulova Maquina?
The 46mm case of the Bulova Maquina 98A224 is quite substantial, making it best suited for medium to larger wrist sizes, typically 7 inches (18 cm) and above, to ensure a comfortable and proportionate fit.
What kind of crystal does the Bulova Maquina 98A224 use?
The Bulova Maquina 98A224 features an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. This material is highly resistant to scratches, ensuring the dial remains clear and legible over time, even with regular daily use.
Editor's take
The Bulova Maquina 98A224 sits in Bulova's Classic line as a substantial automatic with an open aperture on the dial, a layout that gives a glimpse of the movement without going to a full skeleton. The 46mm stainless steel case sets the tone here, this is a watch with real presence on the wrist rather than a discreet daily piece.
The driving force is a Japanese automatic movement, self-winding and free of any battery. The black dial carries the open aperture as its main point of interest, and a sapphire crystal sits over it, which is the harder, more scratch-resistant choice you want on a watch meant for regular wear. Water resistance is rated at 100m, enough for swimming and general exposure to water, though it is not a dive watch and should be treated as such.
The main thing to weigh before buying is the size. At 46mm with a stainless steel bracelet, the Maquina wears large, so a smaller wrist may find it overwhelming, and anyone after a quiet, understated dial will not find that here. The open aperture is a matter of taste, some readers like the mechanical view, others prefer a clean dial.
For the buyer who wants a visible nod to the movement, a sapphire crystal and a genuine automatic at an accessible point in the range, the 98A224 makes sense. If a more restrained look or a smaller case is the priority, it is worth looking at other Maquina and Classic references before settling on this one.
