Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W suitable for swimming or showering?
With a water resistance of 100 metres, the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W is suitable for recreational swimming and showering. However, it is not recommended for diving or prolonged submersion, especially due to its leather strap.
How does the Eco-Drive movement in this watch work?
The Eco-Drive movement in the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W converts any light source, natural or artificial, into energy. This energy is stored in a power cell, allowing the watch to run continuously without ever needing a battery replacement, making it very convenient for daily use.
What makes the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W different from other Citizen watches in its price range?
The Citizen Ships AW1738-05W stands out with its unique Star Wars theme, featuring iconic X-wing and TIE Fighter designs on the dial and an etched case back. While many Citizen watches offer reliable Eco-Drive technology, this model specifically caters to fans seeking a distinctive, themed timepiece.
What wrist sizes is the 45mm case of this watch suitable for?
The 45mm case of the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W is generally suitable for medium to larger wrist sizes, typically ranging from 7 to 8.5 inches (18-21.5 cm) in circumference. For smaller wrists, it might appear quite prominent, but personal preference for a larger watch is also a factor.
How should I care for the leather strap of my Citizen Ships AW1738-05W?

Editor's take
The Citizen Ships AW1738-05W is a fascinating timepiece that marries Citizen's reputation for reliable, accessible watchmaking with a beloved pop culture phenomenon. Designed for Star Wars enthusiasts and those who appreciate a distinctive aesthetic, this model stands out in the casual watch segment. It's a statement piece that doesn't compromise on everyday functionality.
Central to its appeal is the Eco-Drive solar movement, a hallmark of Citizen's commitment to sustainable and maintenance-free timekeeping. This technology ensures the watch is continuously powered by any light source, eliminating the need for battery changes. The robust 45mm black ion-plated stainless steel case and spherical mineral crystal provide durability, while the 100m water resistance makes it suitable for daily wear and splashes.
One point to consider is the use of a mineral crystal rather than sapphire. While adequate for most daily activities, sapphire offers superior scratch resistance, which might be a preference for some users given the watch's thematic and potentially collectible nature. The leather strap, while stylish, may also require more care than a metal bracelet.
Ultimately, the Citizen Ships AW1738-05W is an excellent choice for Star Wars fans seeking a reliable and unique timepiece that reflects their passion. For those prioritising extreme durability or a more traditional watch aesthetic without the thematic elements, other Citizen Promaster models or classic field watches might offer suitable alternatives.
