Description
The Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic is a men's automatic dive watch built around a round 43mm case in high-tech ceramic. It pairs a black dial with a black rubber strap and suits anyone who wants a light, scratch-resistant diver for daily wear.
The movement is a Swiss automatic fitted with a Nivachron hairspring, and the case is rated water resistant to 30 bar, or 300 metres. A transparent sapphire case back with anti-reflective coating shows the movement, and the case is hypoallergenic. The strap closes with a deployment clasp.
The standout figure is the 80-hour power reserve, which means the watch keeps running through a full weekend off the wrist. At 14.6mm thick with a 20mm lug width, it is a robust everyday diver that handles swimming and water sports with ease.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim and snorkel with the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic?
Yes for swimming, snorkelling and recreational diving, since the watch is rated to 30 bar, or 300 m. That is well beyond what daily swimming and water sport need. Rinse it with fresh water after salt exposure and keep the crown fully pushed in.
How long does it run if I take it off for the weekend?
This Rado has an 80-hour power reserve, so it generally keeps running for more than three days off the wrist. A Friday evening removal will usually still be ticking on Monday morning. Wearing it daily keeps the automatic movement topped up.
Will a 43mm ceramic case fit my wrist?
The case is 43mm across and 14.6mm thick, with a 20mm lug width. It generally suits medium to larger wrists, roughly 6.75 to 8 inches. On smaller wrists the diameter will look noticeable, so try it on first if possible.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin or an everyday sport routine?
The ceramic case is described as hypoallergenic and scratch-resistant, which makes it comfortable for people who react to certain metals. The rubber strap also handles sweat and gym sessions well, so it works as a daily sport watch.
How does the Captain Cook ceramic differ from a steel diver?
The main differences are the high-tech ceramic case, which resists scratches better than steel, and the Nivachron hairspring with an 80-hour reserve. Steel divers are often slimmer and easier to restyle, so choose one of those if thickness matters most.
How often does it need service?
Automatic watches generally benefit from servicing every five years or so, with a water resistance check each year if you swim often. Any authorised service centre can test the 300 m rating and replace the gaskets when needed.
Editor's take
Rado has spent decades making its name with scratch-proof materials, and the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic carries that thread into the dive category. It is aimed at buyers who want a modern diver with a high-tech ceramic case rather than the usual steel, finished with a black dial and a rubber strap.
The technical headline is the Nivachron hairspring in a Swiss automatic movement, paired with an 80-hour power reserve. Nivachron resists magnetic fields and temperature swings better than a standard spring, and the long reserve means the watch survives a weekend in a drawer. The transparent sapphire case back with anti-reflective coating lets you watch the movement work.
The listing gives the case a 14.6mm thickness, which is substantial under a shirt cuff, and the 43mm diameter wears large on slimmer wrists. The 20mm lug width and deployment clasp with rubber strap also limit styling options compared with a steel bracelet. If you want a thinner everyday dive watch, look at smaller steel divers in the same bracket.
This suits someone who wants a hard-wearing, hypoallergenic diver rated to 300 m and does not mind some bulk. Buyers who prefer a traditional steel look, or want a smaller case, should compare steel-case Swiss automatics at a similar price.
