A COSC-Certified Automatic is a self-winding watch whose movement has been independently approved as a chronometer by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. The testing happens before the movement is cased: 15 days in five positions and three temperatures (8°C, 23°C, 38°C), with the average daily rate over the first ten days required to fall between -4 and +6 seconds. The word you see on the dial, "Chronometer," is backed by a paper certificate in the box, and it represents outside verification of how well the maker regulated and assembled the caliber, not the brand's own word.
Real examples show where this sits in the market. Breitling has certified its entire production with COSC since 2000, and the 2025 Superocean Heritage starts at $5,250 for the 36mm, with the 40 and 42mm steel versions running $6,200 on rubber or $6,500 on the mesh bracelet. Tudor's in-house caliber MT5612 is COSC-certified with a 70-hour power reserve and drives the larger Pelagos, while the slimmer Pelagos 39 carries the same certification through its MT5400 and trades around $4,000 to $4,120. At the accessible end, the Tissot Ballade Powermatic 80 COSC brings certified accuracy down to roughly 1,025 Euro in steel, which is strong value for an independently tested automatic.
When buying, look for the "Officially Certified Chronometer" wording on the dial or caseback and the numbered certificate in the box. This tier suits the buyer who wants documented precision but does not want to pay Rolex money to get it. You gain a daily rate you will actually notice staying tight; the trade-off is that, like any automatic, it still needs periodic service, and entry-level chronometers offer only modest resistance to magnetic fields.
One nuance is worth understanding: COSC tests the bare movement, so several brands build on top of it. Rolex's Superlative Chronometer guarantees -2/+2 seconds a day after casing, and Omega has layered METAS Master Chronometer certification over a COSC base since 2015. The newer COSC Excellence Chronometer, announced in February 2026 and deploying that October, tests the cased watch to -2/+4 seconds a day with at least 200 Gauss magnetic resistance and robot wrist-wear simulation. COSC is the floor, not the ceiling.
