A Skeleton Rotor is the oscillating weight of an automatic movement with its metal hollowed out and carved back. A standard rotor is solid, so from the caseback it hides roughly half the bridges and gear train behind a swinging slab of metal. A Skeleton Rotor is openworked instead, leaving only enough mass to keep winding the mainspring as your wrist moves, while the finishing and architecture beneath stay visible. This is not a complication, it is a design choice, and it differs from a full skeleton movement in that here only the rotor itself is opened up, not the entire caliber.

The range is wide. At the top, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak spins a 22k gold oscillating weight over openworked bridges, rhodium-toned on the openworked tourbillon and chronograph pieces, usually well north of $40,000. The Piaget Polo Skeleton runs the 2.4mm caliber 1200S1 with an off-center micro-rotor, and the ceramic version landed at $42,900 when it arrived in August 2024. H. Moser's Streamliner and Endeavour Tourbillon Skeleton both use the HMC 814 with a hollowed-out barrel and an openworked treatment. Lower down, Tudor's current Black Bay models carry the MT5602-U with an openworked tungsten monobloc rotor and laser radial grooving, sitting around $4,000. Tissot's Chemin des Tourelles Skeleton, with a Powermatic 80 and 80-hour reserve, starts near $1,000, and the Hamilton Ventura Edge Skeleton lands around $1,900.

When buying, first decide which side you want to watch. Some rotors are openworked for the caseback view, others are visible from the dial, and they read very differently on the wrist. Tungsten rotors are denser and heavier than solid gold, so they wind efficiently even when openworked, which is why brands like Tudor favor them. Look closely at the finishing: real anglage, perlage, or sandblasting separates a serious piece from a budget model where the rotor is simply laser-cut. A very aggressively skeletonized rotor looks lighter but loses mass, so winding efficiency can drop and the watch may stop sooner sitting on a desk.

Micro-rotors and peripheral rotors chase the same goal of not covering the movement, but they shrink the weight or push it to the edge rather than openworking it. If you enjoy watching the mechanism but do not want the legibility trade-off of a full skeleton dial, a closed-dial watch with a Skeleton Rotor is usually the most balanced pick.
