Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E suitable for swimming or showering?
The Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E has a water resistance of 50 metres. This rating means it is suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but it is not recommended for diving, snorkelling, or high-impact water sports to ensure its longevity.
What makes the Eco-Drive movement in this watch special compared to other quartz watches?
The Eco-Drive movement in the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E is unique because it's solar-powered, meaning it converts any light source into energy to power the watch. Unlike standard quartz watches that require periodic battery replacements, this model never needs a battery change, offering superior convenience and environmental benefits.
What is the recommended wrist size for the 37mm Citizen Garrison?
With its 37mm case diameter and 18.13mm lug width, the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E is generally well-suited for smaller to medium wrist sizes, typically ranging from 6 to 7.5 inches (15 to 19 cm). It offers a comfortable and proportionate fit without being overly bulky on the wrist.
How durable is the mineral crystal on the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E?
The mineral crystal on the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E provides good resistance against everyday impacts and scratches, making it a practical choice for a field watch. While not as scratch-resistant as sapphire, it is more shatter-resistant, offering a robust option for daily wear and outdoor activities.
Does the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E require any special maintenance?
The Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E, with its Eco-Drive solar movement, requires minimal maintenance. Simply ensure it is regularly exposed to light to keep it charged. Periodic cleaning of the case and strap, and occasional checks of the water resistance seals by a professional, will help maintain its performance over time.
Editor's take
The Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E presents itself as an accessible and reliable field watch, perfectly suited for those who appreciate a no-fuss, utilitarian aesthetic. Its military-inspired design and compact 37mm case make it an excellent choice for daily wear, blending seamlessly into both casual and more rugged environments. This timepiece is ideal for individuals seeking a dependable watch without the need for constant attention.
Central to its appeal is Citizen's proprietary Eco-Drive movement, a solar-powered quartz calibre that harnesses light from any source to keep the watch running indefinitely. This innovative technology eliminates the need for battery changes, offering unparalleled convenience. The watch features a durable mineral crystal protecting its black dial, which includes practical day and date complications, all housed within a robust stainless steel case.
While the 50-metre water resistance is sufficient for daily splashes and light rain, it falls short of what serious water sports enthusiasts might require. This is not a a dive watch, and prolonged immersion or high-impact water activities should be avoided. Its smaller case size, while versatile, might also feel less substantial for those accustomed to larger, more contemporary watch dimensions.
Ultimately, the Citizen Garrison BM8186-15E is a strong recommendation for anyone desiring a reliable, low-maintenance, and stylish field watch. Its Eco-Drive technology and classic design offer exceptional value, making it a superb entry point into the world of solar-powered timekeeping. For those needing greater water resistance, exploring Citizen's Promaster line might be a suitable alternative.
