Description
The Longines Spirit Zulu Time is a travel-minded automatic from the Spirit line, built for wearers who want a second time zone without a bulky case. At 39mm in diameter it suits most wrists comfortably.
Inside sits the Swiss automatic L844 movement, which shows hours, minutes, seconds and date, and adds a 24-hour hand with a time zone mechanism. The case is stainless steel with a sapphire crystal over an anthracite dial, framed by a ceramic bezel.
The beige leather strap closes with a double security folding clasp that has a micro adjustment system, so the fit can be fine-tuned through the day. The strap is interchangeable, and the 21mm lug width opens the door to other straps. Longines backs the watch with a 5 year international warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Longines Spirit Zulu Time every day?
Yes for daily wear in the office and on trips, since the 39mm stainless steel case, sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel are built to handle regular use. Keep it away from heavy water exposure, as no water resistance rating is listed for this model.
How does the second time zone work on this watch?
The L844 automatic movement drives a 24-hour hand with a time zone mechanism, so you can follow home time while the main hands show local time. The date is also shown, making it practical on long trips and across several time zones.
Will a 39mm case look right on my wrist?
A 39mm case with a 13.5mm thickness usually fits average and smaller wrists well, and is a moderate size for a GMT. Wrists of about 6.5 to 7.5 inches normally wear it comfortably, while larger wrists still carry it without trouble.
Can I swap the leather strap on the Spirit Zulu Time?
The strap is listed as interchangeable and the lug width is 21mm, so any quality 21mm strap should fit. The standard beige leather has a double security folding clasp with micro adjustment, a useful feature worth keeping in mind when choosing a replacement.
How is it different from a chronograph or a plain three-hand watch?
Compared with a plain three-hand watch, this model adds a 24-hour hand for a second zone alongside a date window. Versus a chronograph, it is made for travel rather than timing, so it is the better alternative if you cross time zones often.
How often should the automatic movement be serviced?
Mechanical watches like this one with the L844 are generally serviced every five years or so, depending on use. Service at an authorised centre keeps timekeeping accurate, and a sport or travel routine may call for a slightly shorter interval.
Editor's take
Longines positions the Spirit Zulu Time as a compact travel watch for people who cross time zones and prefer a 39mm case over the oversized GMTs common today. It belongs to the Spirit collection, which borrows from the brand's aviation heritage, and the anthracite dial keeps the look restrained.
The key component is the L844 automatic movement, a Swiss calibre that adds a 24-hour hand with a time zone mechanism to the usual hours, minutes, seconds and date. Above the dial sits sapphire crystal, and the ceramic bezel resists scratches well, which suits a watch meant to travel.
The limitation is practical. The spec sheet gives no water resistance figure, so it is safer to treat it as a dry-land watch for daily wear and travel rather than for swimming. A leather strap also dislikes humidity, which matters on beach trips, though the 21mm lug width makes a swap to another strap simple.
It suits frequent travellers and anyone who wants a refined GMT on a beige leather strap with a micro adjustment clasp. For a similar budget, a Swiss GMT on a steel bracelet is the alternative if you want more robustness.
