Editor's take
The Glycine Airman The Chief GL0472 positions itself as a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking a blend of aviation history and practical functionality. This 40mm automatic GMT watch from the esteemed Airman collection continues a legacy of timepieces designed for pilots and world travellers. Its classic aesthetic, featuring a legible black dial, makes it suitable for both casual wear and more formal settings, appealing to a unisex audience that values heritage and utility.
At its core, the GL0472 houses a reliable automatic movement, ensuring consistent timekeeping without the need for battery replacements. The standout feature is its GMT complication, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone simultaneously, a crucial function for those navigating different global regions. The inclusion of a pull and push crown simplifies adjustments, maintaining the watch's streamlined profile while offering ease of use.
While the Airman The Chief offers robust functionality, its water resistance is not explicitly detailed in the provided specifications, which might be a consideration for users expecting a high level of aquatic capability. Furthermore, the absence of a sapphire crystal, if indeed it is not present, could imply a slightly lower scratch resistance compared to some contemporaries in its segment. Potential buyers should verify these aspects based on their specific needs.
Ultimately, the Glycine Airman The Chief GL0472 is an excellent recommendation for individuals who appreciate aviation-inspired design and the practical benefits of a GMT function. It serves as a more accessible alternative to higher-end GMT models, offering a distinctive character and a nod to horological history. For those prioritising a robust travel companion with a strong identity, this model presents a strong case.
