Description
The Rado Captain Cook Hyperchrome is a men's automatic watch with a vintage-inspired look and a brown guilloche dial. It suits wearers who want a retro sports style backed by a Swiss movement and a leather strap for everyday use.
The 42 mm case is built from stainless steel combined with high-tech ceramic, and the crystal is sapphire with an anti-reflective coating. The Swiss automatic movement drives a date display, and the watch is water resistant to 200 m. Lugs measure 18 mm, which makes strap changes straightforward.
The standout detail is the power reserve of up to 80 hours, which means the watch keeps running through a weekend off the wrist. At 12.1 mm thick, it sits as a solid sports watch that still pairs naturally with casual and smart outfits alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with the Rado Captain Cook on a leather strap?
The case is rated to 200 m, so the watch itself handles swimming and showering. The leather strap is the weak point, as repeated soaking makes it stiffen and wear faster. For regular water use, a rubber or metal strap on the 18 mm lugs is the better choice.
How long does it run if I leave it off my wrist?
The Swiss automatic movement in this Captain Cook has a power reserve of up to 80 hours. That is more than three days, so it generally keeps running through a weekend in a drawer and you only need to reset the date after longer breaks.
Will a 42 mm case fit a smaller wrist?
A 42 mm case with 18 mm lugs suits most average wrists of roughly 6.5 to 8 inches. At 12.1 mm thick it sits fairly tall, so very slim wrists may notice the height more than the diameter, but the leather strap helps it sit close.
How does it compare with a typical steel diver?
Compared with black dial steel divers, this model offers a brown guilloche dial, high-tech ceramic in the case and a leather strap for a warmer retro look. It also has an 80 hour reserve. If you want maximum toughness, an alternative on a steel bracelet may suit better.
Is the crystal resistant to everyday scratches?
The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on this Rado is very hard and resists scratches from daily wear far better than mineral glass. The coating also cuts glare, so the date and dial stay readable in bright light.
What service does an automatic like this need?
As a Swiss automatic, it generally benefits from a service every five years or so to refresh lubrication and check seals. Because it is water resistant to 200 m, having the gaskets pressure tested at service is sensible if you swim with it.
Editor's take
Rado revived the Captain Cook name from its 1960s diving lineage, and this Hyperchrome version brings that heritage to a wearer who wants a retro sports watch without a vintage price tag or vintage maintenance. The brown guilloche dial and leather strap give it a warm, relaxed character that sets it apart from the black-and-steel divers most brands offer.
The technical headline is the Swiss automatic movement with an 80 hour power reserve, long enough that the watch keeps time after a weekend in the drawer. The 42 mm case pairs stainless steel with high-tech ceramic, and the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating keeps the dial readable and resistant to scratches.
The main trade-off is the strap and rating. With 200 m of water resistance the watch handles swimming comfortably, but a leather strap does not like repeated soaking, so anyone planning to use it in water should consider a rubber or metal alternative on the 18 mm lugs. At 12.1 mm thick it also wears taller than a slim dress piece.
It suits buyers who like vintage-inspired sports styling and want a Swiss automatic for daily wear. If you prefer a more purely tool-oriented diver, look at steel-bracelet models from Tudor or Seiko in a similar price bracket.

Automatic Movement, 200m Rated
The R32505305 pairs a 42.0mm stainless steel case with a self-winding automatic movement, so it runs from wrist motion without a battery. A 200m water resistance rating puts it well beyond daily splash exposure, and the sapphire crystal resists scratches from regular wear.
