Description
The Rado DiaStar Original is an automatic men's watch from the DiaStar line, shown here in the 60-Year Anniversary Edition by Alfredo Häberli. It suits wearers who like a modern, sculpted look with an oval silver dial and a matching bracelet.
The case is stainless steel with Ceramos in the material description and measures 38.0 mm across and 12.3 mm thick. An automatic movement drives the analogue display, a sapphire crystal covers the dial, and water resistance is rated to 100 m. The lug width is 20.0 mm.
The stainless steel bracelet closes with a foldover clasp and is paired with a silver colourway on the dial. At around 70 g, it wears as a solid, compact piece for daily use, and the sapphire crystal helps the dial stay clear of scratches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Rado DiaStar Original in the shower or for swimming?
Yes, the 100 m water resistance of the Rado DiaStar Original is generally sufficient for showers and casual swimming. Keep the crown pushed in, and avoid hot water and steam, which can wear down the gaskets over time. It is not designed as a dive watch.
Will a 38 mm watch fit my wrist?
The 38.0 mm case with a 12.3 mm thickness generally suits wrists from around 6.5 to 7.5 inches. The oval case and bracelet make it wear compact. The 20.0 mm lug width shapes the bracelet, so check the fit before buying if your wrist is large.
Is it a good everyday watch for the office and sport like walking?
For daily use the DiaStar Original works well. The sapphire crystal resists scratches, the bracelet is stainless steel, and 100 m water resistance copes with rain and hand washing. For walking it is fine, but heavy sport calls for a more shock-focused watch.
How is it different from a quartz dress watch?
This Rado uses an automatic movement, so it runs from wrist motion rather than a battery, and you will not need battery changes. Compared with a quartz watch it is slightly thicker and less precise, but it offers mechanical appeal and a wearable oval design.
Does it need a battery change or regular service?
As an automatic it has no battery. A service every four to six years is typical, covering lubrication and a gasket check, and a pressure test to keep the 100 m rating reliable. A registered service centre can handle it.
Who is this watch suitable for as a gift?
It suits men who like modern, design-led watches and the DiaStar heritage. The silver dial and stainless steel bracelet are easy to pair with most outfits, so the Rado DiaStar Original works well as a milestone or anniversary gift.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line dates to 1962 and was among the first to bet on scratch-resistant materials, so a 60-Year Anniversary Edition designed by Alfredo Häberli carries real weight. This DiaStar Original keeps the oval silhouette and pairs it with a modern, uncluttered silver face, aimed at wearers who prefer design-led watches over tool-style ones.
The listing points to a Stainless Steel Ceramos case, an automatic movement and a sapphire crystal, all in a case of 38.0 mm by 12.3 mm. The 100 m water resistance is more than enough for showers and swimming, and the 20.0 mm lug width suits the integrated look of the stainless steel bracelet.
The limits come from the specification itself. The listing names no calibre and no power reserve, so anyone who buys on movement pedigree will want to look at other pieces. At 12.3 mm thick it sits a little tall for a slim dress profile, and 100 m is a daily-wear rating rather than a dive spec.
It suits collectors who value design heritage and want an automatic with a foldover clasp and a bracelet that carries the case shape. In a similar range, a Swiss-made round dress automatic with a documented calibre would be the sensible alternative if movement detail matters most.
