Its classic aesthetic, combined with practical features, makes it suitable for both active lifestyles and casual wear. Frequently Asked Questions
Is this watch suitable for professional scuba diving?
This watch has a water resistance rating of 100 metres, making it suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and light recreational diving. It is not an ISO 6425 certified dive watch, so it is not recommended for deep-sea or professional scuba activities.
What kind of movement does this watch use and what is its battery life?
This Pelagos model is powered by a precise Japanese quartz movement, known for its accuracy and reliability. The battery typically provides power for approximately 2 to 3 years before it requires replacement by a professional watch technician.
Is the watch resistant to magnetic fields?
The stainless steel case provides a basic level of protection against common magnetic fields encountered in daily life. However, it is not specifically rated as an antimagnetic watch. To ensure timekeeping accuracy, avoid resting it on or near strong magnets.
How good is the lume for visibility in the dark?
The hands and hour markers are coated with luminous material to ensure legibility in low-light conditions. After exposure to a strong light source, the lume will glow brightly and then fade over several hours. The initial brightness and duration depend on the charging time.
How will the 42mm case size fit on an average wrist?
A 42mm case diameter is a versatile and popular size that fits comfortably on most men's wrists. The design of the lugs and the flexible rubber strap help it conform well, providing a balanced look for both smaller and larger wrist sizes.
What is the recommended service interval for this watch?
Quartz watches require minimal regular maintenance. We recommend having the battery replaced every 2-3 years. When the battery is changed, it is also a good idea to have a watchmaker inspect and, if needed, replace the case back gaskets to maintain water resistance.
Editor's take
The Stuhrling Original Pelagos 3950R.1 positions itself as an accessible and robust dive-inspired timepiece for the everyday adventurer. It caters to individuals seeking a reliable, low-maintenance watch that can withstand the rigours of daily wear and light water activities. This model combines classic dive watch aesthetics with modern practicality, making it a versatile choice for a broad audience.
Powering this watch is a dependable Japanese Miyota quartz movement, known for its accuracy and longevity, eliminating the need for manual winding. The 42mm stainless steel case is complemented by a distinctive coin edge bezel and a durable mineral glass crystal. With a water resistance rating of 100 metres, the Pelagos 3950R.1 is suitable for swimming and snorkeling, offering peace of mind for water-based recreation.
While the quartz movement ensures reliability and affordability, some watch enthusiasts might prefer the traditional craftsmanship and sweeping second hand of an automatic movement. Additionally, the use of mineral glass, though robust, is less scratch-resistant than sapphire, which is often found on higher-end dive watches. This is a trade-off for its competitive price point.
Overall, the Stuhrling Original Pelagos 3950R.1 is an excellent choice for those who prioritise functionality, durability, and a classic dive watch look without a significant investment. It's ideal for active individuals or as a reliable daily wear, offering a solid alternative to more expensive automatic dive watches for casual use.
