Frequently Asked Questions
What type of movement does this watch use?
This watch is equipped with the Stuhrling Calibre ST-90050, a self-winding automatic movement. It is powered by the motion of your wrist, so it does not require a battery. The intricate skeleton dial allows you to see the movement in action.
What materials are the case and strap made from?

How water-resistant is this watch? Can I swim with it?
The Special Reserve 3918 has a water resistance rating of 50 metres (5 ATM). This makes it suitable for everyday use, including splashes and brief immersion in water. It is not recommended for swimming, showering, or diving.
How will the 42mm case fit on an average wrist?
A 42mm case is a versatile size that fits well on most men's wrists, offering a noticeable presence without being overly large. The leather strap is adjustable and will conform to your wrist for a secure feel. We recommend measuring your wrist to ensure it meets your personal preference for size.
Is this watch a good choice for a special occasion gift?
Yes, with its intricate skeleton dial, elegant gold-tone case, and classic leather strap, this watch makes a memorable and sophisticated gift. Its automatic movement is a point of fascination for many, making it an excellent choice for marking a special milestone like a graduation or anniversary.
How often does an automatic watch like this need to be serviced?

This routine maintenance involves cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting the movement by a professional watchmaker. Regular servicing ensures the watch continues to keep accurate time for years to come.
Editor's take
The Stuhrling Original Special Reserve 3918.3 presents an accessible entry into the fascinating world of mechanical skeleton watches, appealing to those who appreciate the visible artistry of horology. This timepiece is particularly suited for individuals seeking a distinctive dress watch that sparks conversation and showcases a passion for traditional craftsmanship without a prohibitive price tag.
Its core appeal lies in the automatic movement visible through the captivating skeleton dial, offering a constant reminder of the intricate engineering within. The 42mm stainless steel case provides a substantial yet comfortable presence on the wrist, complemented by a classic leather strap. While the mineral crystal is durable, it's a common choice at this price point, protecting the intricate gold-toned dial effectively.
One objective consideration is the 50m water resistance, which, while adequate for daily splashes and light rain, means this watch is not suitable for swimming or showering. Enthusiasts looking for a more robust or tool-oriented timepiece might find this limitation significant. Additionally, the intricate skeleton design, while beautiful, can sometimes make quick time-telling a minor challenge for some users.
Ultimately, the Stuhrling Original 3918.3 is an excellent choice for a gentleman's dress watch or a unique casual piece. It's ideal for those who prioritise aesthetic appeal and the charm of a visible mechanical movement over extreme durability or high water resistance. For a similar budget, alternatives might include simpler automatic dress watches with solid dials or more robust quartz options.
