Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU suitable for daily swimming and showering?
Yes, the Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU is water-resistant to 100 metres (330 feet), making it suitable for daily swimming and snorkelling. However, it is not recommended for scuba diving, as the pressure at greater depths can exceed its resistance limits. Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in before water exposure.
What makes this Timex watch a good alternative compared to other outdoor digital watches?
The Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU stands out with its shock resistance to I.S.O. standards, offering superior durability for rugged use. Its Indiglo light-up dial provides excellent visibility in low light, a feature not always found in competitors. This combination of robust build and practical illumination makes it a strong contender for outdoor enthusiasts.
What type of movement does the Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU use and what are its key functions?
This Timex watch uses a reliable digital quartz movement for precise timekeeping. It features a 100-hour chronograph, a 24-hour countdown timer, and multiple alarms, making it highly functional for various activities. Additionally, it includes a 24-hour military time mode and two time zones.
How durable is the acrylic glass on this Expedition watch for active use?
The acrylic glass on the Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU is chosen for its impact resistance, which is beneficial for active use where bumps and drops might occur. While it is less prone to shattering than mineral or sapphire, it can be more susceptible to scratches. Minor scratches can often be buffed out with specialised acrylic polish.
Who is this Timex Expedition Base Shock watch most suitable for, considering its features and design?
The Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU is most suitable for men who lead an active lifestyle, engage in outdoor sports like hiking, or require a highly durable and functional watch for everyday tasks. Its 45mm resin case and digital display cater to those prioritising ruggedness, readability, and practical complications over traditional aesthetics.
Editor's take
The Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU positions itself as a no-nonsense, highly functional timepiece for the active individual. Part of the renowned Expedition collection, this model embodies Timex's commitment to accessible outdoor utility, offering a robust design without an exorbitant price tag. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a reliable watch for everyday adventures and demanding environments.
At its core, this watch features a precise digital quartz movement, ensuring accurate timekeeping and a host of practical functions. Its shock resistance to I.S.O. standards provides peace of mind during strenuous activities, while the 100m water resistance makes it suitable for swimming and snorkelling. The integrated chronograph, timer, and multiple alarms further enhance its utility, making it a versatile tool on the wrist.
While the acrylic glass contributes to its overall impact resistance and keeps the cost down, it is more prone to scratches compared to sapphire. This might be a consideration for users who prioritise scratch resistance above all else. Additionally, the digital display, though highly functional, lacks the traditional aesthetic appeal of an analogue watch, which might not suit all preferences.
Ultimately, the Timex Expedition Base Shock T49896SU is recommended for outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, or anyone needing a durable, feature-rich digital watch for daily wear. For those seeking a more traditional look or superior scratch protection, exploring analogue field watches with mineral or sapphire crystals might be a better alternative in a similar price bracket.
