Shock Protection System
A shock protection system is a sprung jewel setting that lets the fine pivot of the balance shift slightly on impact and then return to place, so the delicate balance staff does not snap when the watch is dropped. The best known systems are Incabloc, Seiko Diashock and Citizen Parashock.

The most fragile parts of a mechanical watch are the hair-thin pivots at each end of the balance. Held in a rigid bearing, a hard knock or a drop could bend or break them. A shock protection system solves this by mounting the jewels those pivots ride in on a tiny spring: when an impact arrives the jewel shifts, passing the force to sturdier surfaces, and then the pivot returns to center.
How it works
At the core are the sprung jewels that cradle the pivot carrying the balance wheel. In normal running the jewels stay put. On impact:
- The spring gives: the jewel slides aside and spares the fine pivot
- Load transfers: force moves onto the broad shoulder of the staff
- It recenters: the spring seats the jewel back in place
Named systems
