Editor's take
The Bulova Marine Star 98A226 positions itself as an accessible yet robust automatic timepiece for men who appreciate a blend of nautical aesthetics and mechanical reliability. As part of the enduring Marine Star collection, this model carries a legacy of maritime-inspired design, making it a fitting choice for enthusiasts of water sports or those simply seeking a distinctive, everyday watch with a bold presence. Its design language, featuring a prominent 45mm case and a vibrant orange strap, ensures it stands out on the wrist.
Underneath its striking exterior, the 98A226 is powered by a Japanese automatic movement, a workhorse known for its dependability and ease of maintenance. This self-winding calibre, coupled with a mineral crystal and a stainless steel case, provides a practical and durable construction. The watch boasts a substantial 200m water resistance, making it genuinely capable for recreational diving and serious swimming, aligning perfectly with its marine-themed identity.
However, potential buyers should note that while the 200m water resistance is excellent for most water activities, the use of a mineral crystal rather than sapphire might be a point of consideration for those prioritizing scratch resistance in a tool watch. Sapphire offers superior hardness, though mineral crystal is more shatter-resistant. The large 45mm case, while bold, might also feel substantial on smaller wrists, so a fitting check is advisable.
Ultimately, the Bulova Marine Star 98A226 is an excellent choice for individuals seeking a visually impactful and mechanically sound automatic watch that can handle an active lifestyle. It offers a compelling package for its price point, particularly for those drawn to its distinctive maritime design. For alternatives, one might consider other sport automatics from brands like Seiko or Citizen, especially if a sapphire crystal is a non-negotiable feature.
