Description
The Rado Captain Cook Open Heart is a Swiss automatic men's dive-style watch for those who want a modern take on a nautical classic. It pairs a round 42 mm case with a green gradient lacquered dial and a yellow gold colored bracelet.
The case is built from stainless steel with PVD and high-tech ceramic, topped with a sapphire crystal. The automatic movement runs on a power reserve of 80 hours, and water resistance is rated at 30 bar, or 300 m, with a push-button foldover clasp on the bracelet.
What stands out in daily wear is the long power reserve, which lets the watch sit unworn over a weekend and still keep time. At 12.3 mm thick, it has a solid wrist presence, and the glow-in-the-dark and anti-magnetic features add practical value for diving and sport.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim and snorkel with the Rado Captain Cook Open Heart?
Yes for both. With a 30 bar rating, this Captain Cook handles swimming, snorkeling and recreational diving comfortably. Rinse it in fresh water after sea use, and keep the push-button foldover clasp fully closed while in the water.
How long will it run if I leave it off my wrist for the weekend?
It will keep running for roughly 80 hours on a full wind, so a Friday evening to Monday morning break is fine. The Swiss automatic in this Rado needs only a short wear or a few gentle shakes to restart after a longer rest.
Is 42 mm too big for a 7 inch wrist?
A 42 mm round case usually sits well on wrists of about 6.75 to 7.5 inches. At 12.3 mm thick and with a metal bracelet, this Rado feels fairly substantial, so try it on if your wrist is below 6.5 inches.
How does this differ from a regular steel diver at a similar price?
The Captain Cook Open Heart mixes steel and PVD with high-tech ceramic, uses a green gradient lacquered dial, and has an 80 hour reserve. A plain steel diver is usually more tool-like, while this Rado leans dressier and more decorative.
How often should it be serviced and the battery handled?
It is automatic, so there is no battery to replace. A service every five years or so is typical for lubrication, with the seals checked annually if you swim often to keep the 300 m water resistance reliable.
Is it suitable for sport and everyday use?
Yes, the anti-magnetic seal, sapphire crystal and glow-in-the-dark markings suit daily office wear as well as sport. The yellow gold colored PVD bracelet may mark with rough use, so take care around abrasive surfaces.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook line carries a long dive-watch heritage, and the Open Heart version reworks it for buyers who want mechanical character with a polished, contemporary finish. Here it is a 42 mm round Swiss automatic with a green gradient lacquered dial and a bracelet in yellow gold color.
The technical story starts with the 80 hour power reserve, well beyond many automatics, so the watch survives a weekend off the wrist. The case combines stainless steel with PVD and high-tech ceramic, and the dial sits under a sapphire crystal that resists scratches in daily wear.
The trade-off is size and weight. At 12.3 mm thick and with a heavy bracelet, it will feel substantial on smaller wrists, and the PVD coating on a daily-worn bracelet can show wear at the edges over the years. The foldover clasp with push-buttons is secure but offers no obvious fine-adjustment detail in the specifications.
It suits someone who wants a genuine 300 m rated automatic that looks dressier than a typical tool diver. If you prioritize pure dive-tool utility at a similar price, a steel-bracelet diver from the Swiss mid-range is worth cross-shopping.
