Description
The Rado DiaStar Original Open Heart is a Swiss automatic with an oval 35 mm case and a skeleton-style open heart dial. It suits anyone who wants a distinctive, jewelry-like piece, and Rado lists it as unisex.
The case and middle section are stainless steel, topped by a yellow gold colored PVD coated hardmetal bezel and a vertical faceted sapphire crystal. The automatic movement offers an 80 hour power reserve and an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring, while water resistance is rated at 3 bar, or 30 m.
The yellow sunray dial carries gold colored bevels and six cubic zirconia stones, matched by a PVD coated stainless steel bracelet. A fold-over clasp with openers closes it, and the open heart aperture lets the wearer see the movement at work in daily use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the DiaStar Original Open Heart in the shower?
It is better to keep it out of the shower. The DiaStar Original Open Heart is rated to 3 bar (30 m), which generally covers rain and hand washing but not hot water, steam or swimming. Heat and soap can also affect seals over time, so save it for dry wear.
Is it suitable for daily use at the office?
Yes for most office routines. The sapphire crystal resists scratches from desks and door frames, and the stainless steel bracelet handles daily wear. The PVD gold colored finish is a coating, so it may show wear at contact points over several years of constant use.
Will a 35 mm oval case fit a smaller wrist?
A 35 mm case sits comfortably on smaller and average wrists and generally suits a wrist of around 15 to 18 cm. The oval shape and 12.1 mm thickness give it a compact, dressy presence, and the fold-over clasp with openers makes it easy to put on and take off.
How is the Nivachron hairspring different from a normal one?
Nivachron is an antimagnetic alloy, so magnetic fields from phones, speakers and bags are less likely to disturb timekeeping. Compared with a standard hairspring, it keeps the Rado running more steadily in everyday environments. It works alongside the 80 hour power reserve of this automatic.
How long will it run if I do not wear it for a few days?
With an 80 hour power reserve, the Rado generally keeps running for just over three days once fully wound. That is enough to leave it on the dresser from Friday evening and still have it ticking on Monday morning, though a few minutes on the wrist will restore full reserve.
Who is this watch suitable for compared with a sport automatic?
It suits people who want a dressy, decorative piece with an open heart dial and six cubic zirconia stones. A sport automatic usually offers much higher water resistance. Choose this Rado for style and movement visibility, and a diver style alternative for swimming and active use.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line has long been associated with scratch-resistant materials and unconventional case shapes, and this Original Open Heart keeps that spirit alive in an oval 35 mm format. It is aimed at wearers who want a dressy, decorative automatic rather than a tool watch, and Rado lists it as unisex.
The headline feature is the Nivachron antimagnetic hairspring paired with an 80 hour power reserve. That combination means the watch can sit untouched over a weekend and still be running on Monday, and it is less bothered by everyday magnetic fields from phones and bags. The open heart dial adds visual interest by exposing part of the movement.
The case combines a stainless steel middle part with a PVD coated hardmetal bezel and a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is only 3 bar (30 m), so it handles splashes and hand washing but not swimming or showering. Anyone who needs a robust daily watch for wet conditions should look elsewhere. The gold colored PVD finish will also show wear over years of hard use.
It suits buyers who enjoy decorative detail, from the six cubic zirconia stones to the sunray dial, and who will treat it as a dress piece. For a more subdued alternative at a similar level, look at slim Swiss automatics with plain steel finishes and 50 m ratings.
