Description
Apple Watch SE 3 is the GPS version of Apple's entry-level smartwatch, built around everyday health and fitness tracking. It suits iPhone owners who want workout metrics, sleep insights and safety features on the wrist without moving to a pricier model.
The 40mm model uses temperature sensing for the Vitals and Cycle Tracking apps, and it tracks a sleep score and sleep apnoea notifications. Fall detection and severe car crash detection can connect you with emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.
Battery life is rated at 18 hours, and fast charging is up to twice as quick as on the SE 2, giving up to 8 hours in 15 minutes. The GPS model relies on your iPhone or Wi-Fi for calls, texts, music and notifications, and it accepts a wide range of bands and customisable faces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Apple Watch SE 3 for daily workouts?
Yes for most users, since this smartwatch tracks workouts from running to strength training with real-time metrics and Workout Buddy. It also counts toward a 10K steps a day goal. For everyday sport it covers the basics well, though battery life of 18 hours means planning a charge around long sessions.
Will it work without my iPhone nearby?
The SE 3 GPS model works with your iPhone or Wi-Fi to stay connected. With either one, you can send a text, take a call, listen to music and podcasts and get notifications. It does not carry its own cellular link, so away from both you would lose those connected features.
How often will I need to charge it?
Plan on charging roughly every day, since the rated battery life is 18 hours from sunup to sundown. Fast charging helps: it is up to twice as fast as the SE 2 and gives up to 8 hours in 15 minutes, which suits a quick top-up before heading out.
What is different compared with the SE 2?
The main gains are faster charging, up to twice as fast as the SE 2, plus temperature sensing and sleep apnoea notifications. Those suit buyers who want more health insight without moving to a pricier model. If you already own an SE 2 and charge rarely, the upgrade is a smaller step.
Is it suitable for a smaller wrist?
The 40mm size is the smaller case option, so it generally suits slimmer wrists well. The wide range of bands in different colours, styles and materials lets you adjust the fit and look, which is useful if you share it as a gift.
Does it help in an emergency?
The SE 3 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, help connect you with emergency services and notify your emergency contacts. That makes it a sensible choice for older relatives or solo runners, as the safety service works through the connected iPhone or Wi-Fi.
Editor's take
For iPhone owners who want the essentials of Apple's smartwatch platform, the SE 3 sits at the accessible end of the lineup. It is the 40mm GPS version, so it leans on the phone or Wi-Fi rather than carrying its own cellular link, and it is aimed at daily health and workout tracking.
The most useful addition is temperature sensing, which feeds the Vitals and Cycle Tracking apps, alongside a sleep score and sleep apnoea notifications. Safety is covered by fall detection and severe car crash detection, which can connect you with emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.
The trade-off is endurance. The 18-hour battery life covers a day from sunup to sundown, but it means nightly or near-daily charging, particularly if you also want sleep tracking. Fast charging softens this, with up to 8 hours in 15 minutes, though anyone wanting multi-day runtime should look at a different kind of device.
It suits first-time smartwatch buyers, fitness-minded users and families who want safety features at a sensible price. If you need cellular independence, look at the cellular versions of the lineup, and if multi-day battery matters most, a dedicated fitness band is a reasonable alternative.
