Casio A168W-1 A168WA-1YES, 36mm, Black Dial, Silver Metal Bracelet

The Casio Module 3298 has powered countless watches, establishing a baseline for reliability and function. This A168WA model carries that legacy forward in a design that has remained relevant for decades. Its compact, rectangular case and clear digital readout prioritise legibility and ease of use above all else. The core functions, including a daily alarm, hourly time signal, and a 1/100-second stopwatch, are straightforward to access.

The case is constructed from a durable plastic, finished to resemble polished metal, which contributes to its remarkably low weight on the wrist. This is paired with a chrome-plated bracelet that secures with a simple, adjustable sliding clasp, allowing for a customised fit without removing links. The display is protected by a flat pane of resin (acrylic) glass, which absorbs impacts well but is more prone to surface scratches than mineral or sapphire.

On the wrist, the watch's slim rectangular case (about 38.6 x 36.3 mm, 9.6 mm thick) provides a comfortable, unobtrusive fit for a wide range of wearers. A key feature is the electroluminescent backlight, which illuminates the entire display with a soft, even glow for excellent nighttime visibility.

The A168WA-1YES is a cultural artefact, a direct link to the digital revolution. It appeals to those who value design purity and functional economy over mechanical complexity. Its enduring popularity stems from doing a few things exceptionally well, all driven by the workhorse Module 3298 quartz movement.

Its standout feature is the electroluminescent backlight, which floods the LCD panel with a uniform blue-green light that Casio branded "Illuminator." The case, while made of Plastic, is finished to give the impression of steel, and the display is shielded by a serviceable resin (acrylic) glass. This construction keeps the watch light and accessible.

The primary trade-off is its environmental sealing. The watch carries a 30 m (3 BAR) water resistance rating, fine for rain and handwashing but not for swimming or diving. This is a key consideration for a daily piece. The bracelet is also Chrome Plated rather than solid steel, so the finish can show wear over time, revealing the base metal.

For its cost, few watches offer this level of design history and functional integrity. It is an excellent entry point into collecting, a reliable backup, or a deliberate style choice. Understanding its 30 m rating means keeping it clear of swimming and diving, the A168WA remains an essential and recommended part of the digital watch conversation.
