Casio G-Shock GA-700-1BDR, 53mm, Black Dial, Black Resin Strap

Introduced in 2016, the GA-700 line established a new visual language for G-Shock's analogue-digital models. Its substantial 53.4mm case frames a dial with striking three-dimensional hands and hour markers, creating a sense of depth and power. The design prioritises immediate legibility and a rugged aesthetic that defines the collection.

At the heart of the watch is the dependable quartz Calibre 5522, which drives both the analogue hands and the digital displays. This module provides a full suite of functions, including world time across 31 time zones, a 1/100-second stopwatch, and a countdown timer. A signature feature is the large front button at the six o'clock position, which activates the Super Illuminator LED for clear viewing in any light.

True to its heritage, the watch is built to withstand extreme conditions. The entire structure is housed within a shock-resistant resin case, paired with a durable resin strap for a secure and comfortable fit. With a water resistance rating of 200 metres and a protective mineral crystal, it is engineered for surface water sports and marine activity (Casio rates it for water sports but not diving).

The Calibre 5522 module is a workhorse, providing the foundation for the GA-700's popular analogue-digital format. This is a tool for wearers who need absolute reliability and a straightforward feature set without the complexity of solar charging or radio synchronisation. The hand-shift feature, which moves the analogue hands out of the way of the digital screens, is a thoughtful touch for everyday usability.

The sheer size at 53.4mm is the first thing one notices, but the lightweight Resin construction makes it surprisingly wearable for its dimensions. The case has a distinct industrial, almost mechanical look that sets it apart from the classic square G-Shocks. While the Mineral Crystal is standard for this price point and offers good shatter resistance, it will accumulate scratches more readily than sapphire, an expected trade-off for this type of watch.

The front-facing light button is arguably the single best ergonomic feature of this model, offering instant activation without fumbling for a side pusher. The strap integration is robust, and the overall construction provides confidence, delivering on the promise of 200 metres of water resistance for any recreational water activity. The watch feels secure and ready for demanding use right out of the box.

The GA-700-1BDR reference, with its stealthy black-on-black colour scheme, has a strong streetwear appeal. It's an excellent entry point into the G-Shock world for someone who wants a large, modern-looking watch with unquestionable durability. For those with smaller wrists the size might be a challenge, but for its target audience, the bold presence is precisely the point.
