Description
The Rado Captain Cook is a women's automatic watch with a modern, round design and a 37mm case. It suits anyone who wants a mechanical Swiss watch that sits comfortably on a smaller wrist without losing presence.
The case is stainless steel, 11.1mm thick, and is topped by a sapphire crystal that resists everyday scratches. A Swiss automatic movement powers the analogue display, and water resistance is rated to 100 metres, enough for splashes, showers and swimming.
The white dial is paired with a grey leather strap with an 18mm lug width and a foldover clasp. This makes the watch easy to wear from morning to evening, and the automatic movement means it is wound by the motion of your wrist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear my Captain Cook in the shower or for a swim?
The Rado Captain Cook is rated to 100 m, so showers, rain and swimming are within its limits. The leather strap is the weak point, though, since repeated soaking can stain and stiffen it. For regular swimming, a quick strap swap is sensible.
Is this watch big enough or too big for a small wrist?
At 37mm across and 11.1mm thick with an 18mm lug width, the Captain Cook sits comfortably on small to medium wrists. It has enough presence to read as a proper watch without overhanging the wrist, which suits the women's sizing well.
Does it need a battery, and how do I keep it running?
This Rado uses a Swiss automatic movement, so there is no battery to replace. It winds from wrist motion, so wear it regularly. If it sits unworn for a day or two it may stop, and a few shakes plus setting the time restarts it.
How does it compare to a quartz watch for daily wear?
Compared with quartz, the Captain Cook offers a mechanical movement and a sapphire crystal, which many buyers value for feel and scratch resistance. The trade-off is that it needs periodic service and is less accurate than quartz. It suits those who enjoy owning a mechanical watch.
Can I change the strap on the Captain Cook?
Yes, the 18 mm lug width lets you fit a compatible 18 mm strap in place of the grey leather one. This is a useful alternative if you want a more water-friendly option for sport or summer. A watchmaker can fit it quickly if you prefer.
How often should this automatic watch be serviced?
Mechanical Swiss watches like the Captain Cook are generally serviced every five years or so, depending on use. A water resistance check is also sensible occasionally, particularly if you swim in it, because case seals age with time.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook line has long been tied to the brand's dive-watch heritage, and this 37mm women's version brings that lineage down to a wrist-friendly size. It is aimed at buyers who want a Swiss automatic movement in a compact case rather than a quartz everyday piece.
The stainless steel case is 11.1mm thick and sits under a sapphire crystal, which matters for a watch worn daily because it resists scratching far better than mineral glass. The white dial keeps the face clean and easy to read, while the 100 m water resistance handles showers, rain and swimming.
The main trade-off is the strap. A leather strap is comfortable and dressy, but it does not cope with water as well as a metal bracelet, so swimming with it is not ideal despite the case rating. The foldover clasp is secure, though it offers less quick adjustment than some bracelet systems.
This watch suits someone who wants a mechanical Swiss piece for office and weekend wear with an 18 mm lug width that makes strap swaps straightforward. If you prefer a bracelet or a quartz movement, look at other Swiss collections in a similar price band.
