Will it fit your wrist?
Best on 16.5–17.5 cm (6.5–6.9 in) wrists
A 40 mm case sits just right on these wrists. If your wrist is 17.5–18.5 cm, it looks smaller and more understated. If your wrist is 15.5–16.5 cm, it looks bigger and bolder.

All our watch size dataDescription
The Melbye's 40mm case is constructed from titanium, resulting in a remarkably light presence on the wrist at just 70 grams. This material choice underscores Skagen's focus on comfortable, everyday wear. The slim profile integrates smoothly with the stainless steel mesh bracelet, creating a cohesive and modern silhouette.
A sunray grey dial provides a neutral canvas for the watch's distinctive time display. Instead of a traditional aperture, the day and date are shown on a semicircular subdial that arcs across the left side. This unconventional layout is balanced by simple stick indices and a pop of blue on the seconds hand, adding a point of visual interest without disrupting the clean aesthetic.
Inside, a reliable quartz movement ensures accurate timekeeping with minimal maintenance, a practical choice for a daily-wear piece. The stainless steel mesh bracelet is a signature of the brand, known for its fine texture and adjustability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Skagen Melbye SKW6078 suitable for daily swimming or showering?
The Skagen Melbye SKW6078 has a water resistance of 50 metres (5 ATM), making it suitable for swimming in shallow water and splashes. However, it is not recommended for showering, snorkelling, or diving, as the steam and pressure changes can compromise the seals over time.
What type of movement powers this Skagen Melbye watch?
This Skagen Melbye SKW6078 is powered by a reliable quartz movement. This means it operates on a battery and offers excellent accuracy with minimal maintenance, typically only requiring a battery replacement every few years.
How does the Melbye SKW6078 compare to other minimalist watches in its price range?
The Melbye SKW6078 stands out with its titanium case, offering superior lightness and hypoallergenic properties compared to standard stainless steel watches. Its integrated day-date display and distinctive mesh band also provide a unique blend of functionality and Danish design.
What wrist sizes is the 40mm case of the Skagen Melbye suitable for?
The 40mm case of the Skagen Melbye SKW6078 is a versatile size that generally suits most men's wrists, typically ranging from 6.5 to 8 inches in circumference. Its slim profile and lightweight titanium construction ensure a comfortable fit for daily wear.
Can the stainless steel mesh strap of the Melbye SKW6078 be replaced?
The stainless steel mesh bracelet of the Skagen Melbye SKW6078 is designed to be self-adjustable for a customised fit. While it can be replaced by a watchmaker, its integrated design means finding alternative straps might be more challenging than for watches with standard lug widths.
Are the dial markers on the Skagen Melbye SKW6078 easy to read in various conditions?
The Skagen Melbye SKW6078 features minimalist linear indexes and numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock, providing a clean and uncluttered dial. While designed for clear readability in typical lighting, it does not feature luminous material, so visibility in very low light conditions will be limited.
Editor's take
The Skagen Melbye SKW6078 is for the wearer who values minimalist aesthetics and physical comfort over robust specifications. It is a design-forward accessory powered by a fuss-free quartz movement. Its appeal lies in its slimness and light weight, making it a piece you can forget is on your wrist.
The case material is the primary technical highlight. Using Titanium for a watch in this category is an uncommon choice, contributing directly to the 70-gram weight. This focus on lightness is paired with a distinctive dial where the day-date function is integrated into a graphic arc, a clear nod to Danish design.
Certain choices were made to meet its price point. The dial is protected by a Mineral Crystal, which offers less scratch resistance than sapphire. The 50-metre water resistance rating is sufficient for daily life but not for swimming. The Stainless Steel mesh bracelet, while visually striking, can occasionally pull at arm hair.
For those seeking a reliable watch for the office or casual wear, the Melbye is a strong contender. Its strengths are its Scandinavian design and exceptional comfort, delivered in a package that prioritises form. As an expression of modern, minimalist watch design, the SKW6078 succeeds.
