Description
The Rado Captain Cook is a Swiss automatic watch built around a blue dial with a crosshair face style. It is listed as a unisex model, which suits wrists that prefer a compact, modern dive-inspired look.
The case is stainless steel and measures 39 mm across and 12 mm thick, with a 20 mm lug width. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the movement is a Swiss automatic. Water resistance is rated at 300 m, which is serious diving territory.
The stainless steel bracelet closes with a foldover clasp and carries the silver tone of the case. Because the watch is wound by wrist motion, it needs no battery. It works as an everyday watch that can also go into the water.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep can I take the Rado Captain Cook?
The Captain Cook is rated to 300 m, which covers swimming, snorkeling and recreational diving. Keep the crown fully screwed in before entering the water, and rinse the watch with fresh water after salt exposure to protect the seals.
Will it fit my 6.5 inch wrist?
With a 39 mm case, 20 mm lug width and 12 mm thickness, it generally suits wrists from about 6.5 to 8 inches. The compact diameter helps on smaller wrists, though the thickness is noticeable under tight cuffs.
Does it need a battery?
No. The Captain Cook uses a Swiss automatic movement that winds from wrist motion, so there is no battery to replace. If you leave it unworn for a few days it may stop, and a gentle shake or a few turns of the crown will restart it.
Is it suitable for daily wear and sport?
Yes for most daily use. The stainless steel case and sapphire crystal resist scratches well, and the 300 m rating handles swimming and showering. For regular sport, the foldover clasp keeps the bracelet secure on the wrist.
How is this different from a typical quartz diver?
The Captain Cook is mechanical, so it sweeps smoothly and needs periodic service rather than battery changes. Compared with a quartz diver it costs more to maintain, but it offers sapphire crystal and a Swiss automatic movement.
How often should I service it?
Service intervals for Swiss automatics are generally every five years or so. Because it is a 300 m diver, have the gaskets and water resistance checked yearly if you swim often, through an authorized service center.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook name goes back to the brand's dive watch heritage, and this 39 mm version gives it a compact, wearable footprint. It is listed as unisex, so it suits smaller wrists as well as anyone who finds modern divers oversized. The blue dial with its crosshair layout gives it a clean, tool-like face.
The movement is a Swiss automatic, so the watch winds from wrist motion and needs no battery. The case is stainless steel and the dial is covered by sapphire crystal, a sensible pairing for scratch resistance. The 300 m water resistance rating is generous for a watch this size.
The listing gives no caliber name or power reserve figure, so anyone who cares about those details will need to look elsewhere. At 12 mm thick the watch is not slim, which matters under a fitted cuff. The foldover clasp is secure but offers less fine adjustment than some divers' extensions.
It suits those who want a Swiss automatic diver with real depth capability in a modest 39 mm case. If the budget stretches differently, a Seiko Prospex or a Tissot Seastar covers similar ground. For a mixed daily and weekend swimming watch, the R32223213 reference is a tidy choice.
