Description
The Rado Captain Cook is a men's automatic dive watch with a green dial and a 42 mm round case. It suits anyone who wants a capable everyday watch with a nautical character and a mix of metal and ceramic finishes.
The case combines stainless steel, PVD and high-tech ceramic, and it is topped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The automatic movement carries an 80-hour power reserve, and water resistance is rated at 30 bar, or 300 m. The case measures 12.3 mm thick.
The stainless steel and PVD bracelet in silver and yellow gold tones closes with a foldover clasp with push-button release. The dial and bezel carry glow-in-the-dark markings, and the watch has an anti-magnetic seal, so it works as a diver and as a daily wear piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim and snorkel with the Rado Captain Cook?
Yes for swimming and snorkeling. The Captain Cook is rated to 30 bar, or 300 m, which comfortably covers pool and sea use, showers and recreational diving. As with any dive watch, keep the crown fully screwed in or pushed home before getting wet, and have the seals checked periodically.
How long does it run if I leave it off my wrist?
The automatic movement in this Rado has an 80-hour power reserve, so it typically keeps running for more than three days once fully wound. That means a Friday evening to Monday morning break is no problem, and it should still be running when you pick it up.
Will it fit a smaller wrist?
The Captain Cook has a 42 mm round case that is 12.3 mm thick. On wrists of about 6.5 to 8 inches it generally sits well, though the thickness gives it noticeable presence. Try it on if you have a slimmer wrist or wear tight cuffs.
How does it differ from a plain steel diver?
Compared with a plain steel diver, this model mixes stainless steel, PVD and high-tech ceramic, and has a two-tone silver and yellow gold bracelet with a green dial. If you prefer a uniform steel look, an all-steel alternative may suit you better.
Is the sapphire crystal scratch resistant for daily use?
Sapphire crystal is far harder than mineral glass, so the Captain Cook dial stays clear through everyday knocks and desk contact. It can still chip on a hard impact, but for daily use and sport it is a reliable choice.
How often should the watch be serviced?
For an automatic like this Rado, a service every five years or so is typical, and a seal and pressure check beforehand is sensible if you swim regularly. Water-resistance gaskets age, so a yearly check for frequent swimmers is worthwhile.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook revives a nautical name for buyers who want a Swiss automatic diver that does not look like every other steel tool watch. The green dial and the two-tone stainless steel / PVD bracelet give it a warmer, more jewelry-like tone than most 42 mm divers.
The headline spec is the 80-hour power reserve, which means the watch keeps running through a weekend off the wrist. The case blends steel, PVD and high-tech ceramic, and a sapphire crystal guards the dial against scratches. Rated to 300 m, it handles real swimming and snorkeling, and the anti-magnetic seal adds some protection in everyday life.
The trade-off is bulk. At 12.3 mm thick and with a 640 g listed weight including packaging or bracelet, it sits substantially on the wrist and will not slide under a tight cuff. The mixed silver and yellow gold finish is also a taste matter, and buyers who prefer a plain steel look may find it busy.
It suits someone who wants a distinctive green-dial diver for daily wear and the occasional swim. If you want a more traditional steel look at a similar level, a classic foldover clasp steel diver from another Swiss house is the natural comparison.
