Description
At 30mm across, the Diastar Original R12170343 is sized for smaller wrists and sits flat without crowding the cuff. The stainless steel case carries the collection's rounded, pebble-like profile, and a sapphire crystal covers the blue dial.
Inside is a Swiss automatic movement, so the watch winds from wrist motion and needs no battery changes. That is a notable specification at this diameter, where quartz is the usual choice. The dial color is a calm, saturated blue that reads cleanly against the steel.
The stainless steel bracelet tapers from an 18mm lug width and keeps the whole watch in one finish. Water resistance of 100 meters covers swimming and daily splashes, well beyond what most dress-leaning watches offer.
The Diastar line dates to 1962, when Rado first built a watch around a scratch-resistant case. This reference carries that idea forward in a form that suits a woman who wants a mechanical watch without the bulk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Rado Diastar Original 30mm too small for my wrist?
The 30mm case is designed as a women's size and suits small to medium wrists. The stainless steel bracelet can be sized with removable links for a close fit. If you prefer a larger look, compare it against 35mm or larger models before deciding.
How does the automatic movement work, and do I need to wind it?
The Swiss automatic movement is powered by a rotor that winds the mainspring as you move your wrist. If the watch sits unworn for a couple of days it may stop and need a few turns of the crown or some wear to restart. Wearing it daily keeps it running without manual winding.
How water resistant is this watch for daily use?
It is rated to 100 meters, which covers handwashing, rain, showers and swimming in shallow water. It is not a dive watch, so it is not intended for scuba diving. Keep the crown pushed in fully and avoid hot water or steam to protect the gaskets.
Is the sapphire crystal scratch resistant?
Sapphire crystal is very hard and resists scratches from everyday contact far better than mineral glass. It can still chip or crack from a sharp, hard impact. The stainless steel case and bracelet can show fine surface marks over time.
How often should this automatic watch be serviced?
A service every 5 to 8 years is a typical interval for a Swiss automatic movement, depending on wear and conditions. Service includes cleaning, lubrication, regulation and a water resistance test. Timekeeping that drifts noticeably or a gritty feel when winding are signs it is due sooner.
Is the Diastar Original with a blue dial a good gift?
Yes, it is a good fit for someone who likes a compact, modern steel watch with a distinct look. The blue dial is easy to pair with both casual and formal outfits. The Swiss automatic movement and sapphire crystal make it a durable choice for long-term daily wear.
Editor's take
The Diastar was introduced in 1962 around the idea of a scratch-resistant case, and this 30mm reference keeps the collection's rounded silhouette. It uses a Swiss automatic movement, which is the main draw at this size, since small cases usually default to quartz.
The case is stainless steel, paired with a sapphire crystal over the blue dial. Sapphire resists scratching far better than mineral glass, and it keeps the dial color looking deep and even under direct light. Rated to 100 meters, the watch handles swimming comfortably.
The stainless steel bracelet matches the case finish and tapers to the clasp. It fits an 18mm lug width, so swapping to a strap means choosing that size. The bracelet's link profile suits slim wrists, though fine adjustment depends on the number of links supplied.
The main tradeoff is the 30mm diameter, which is right for small wrists but will look dainty on larger ones. A 100 meter rating is solid for daily wear, but this is not a dedicated diver. Reference R12170343 in blue is a quiet, practical choice for someone who wants an automatic that disappears under a sleeve.
