Description
The Rado DiaStar Original Open Heart is a Swiss automatic watch built around the oval-shaped DiaStar design. It suits wearers who like a compact 35mm case with a visible movement and a polished, jewelry-like look.
The case and bracelet are stainless steel, paired with a hardmetal bezel and a faceted sapphire crystal. The automatic movement offers an 80 hour power reserve and an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring. Water resistance is 3 bar, or 30 m.
The black sunray dial carries rhodium colored bevels and six cubic zirconia stones, with an open heart aperture showing the balance. The folded steel bracelet closes with a fold-over clasp, and the 20mm lug width keeps strap options simple for daily wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Rado DiaStar Open Heart in the shower or pool?
It is rated to 3 bar, or 30 m, which covers splashes and light rain. For showers, swimming or sport in water, a dive watch is a safer choice. Hot steam and soap can also stress the gaskets over time, so keep this Rado DiaStar for dry daily wear.
Will a 35mm case look too small on my wrist?
The case is 35mm wide and 11.9mm thick with a 20mm lug width, so it wears as a compact, slim piece. It generally suits small to medium wrists well and also works as a unisex size on larger wrists for a vintage look.
How long will it run if I leave it off for a weekend?
The automatic movement has an 80 hour power reserve, which is just over three days. That means you can take it off Friday evening and usually find it still running on Monday morning without having to reset it.
Does the Nivachron hairspring make a difference in daily use?
Nivachron is an antimagnetic hairspring alloy. It helps the watch keep steadier time near phones, laptops and speakers, where magnetic fields often disturb ordinary hairsprings, so daily accuracy tends to hold up better with this Rado.
How does it differ from a regular dress automatic?
Compared with most dress automatics it adds an open heart aperture, a hardmetal bezel, a faceted sapphire crystal and an oval case. An alternative is a round-case dress watch, which usually offers more water resistance but less visual character.
How should I service the watch?
Automatic movements generally benefit from a service every five years or so, with the gaskets checked at that point. Because this model is water resistant to only 30 m, avoid wet use and have a watchmaker check the seals when you service it.
Editor's take
The DiaStar is one of Rado's oldest design lines, and the Original Open Heart takes its oval silhouette into a compact 35mm size. It suits people who want a small, unisex automatic with a visible movement rather than a large tool watch, and its Open Heart aperture is the main talking point.
Inside sits a Swiss automatic movement with an 80 hour power reserve, so it can sit over a weekend and still run. The Nivachron hairspring is antimagnetic, which helps everyday accuracy near phones and laptops. On the outside, a hardmetal bezel and a faceted sapphire crystal give the scratch resistance that the DiaStar name is known for.
The trade-off is water resistance. At 3 bar, or 30 m, the watch handles splashes and rain but not swimming or showering, so a diver or sports watch is the better pick for that. The folded stainless steel bracelet with its fold-over clasp is comfortable but less adjustable than a pin-buckle setup.
This watch fits anyone who wants a refined, jewelry-leaning automatic with some mechanical theater on the dial. In the same price range, look at dressy Swiss automatics with a round case if the oval shape is not your taste, though few match the black sunray dial with its six cubic zirconia stones.
