The Garmin Forerunner 165 stands out with its vibrant AMOLED display and comprehensive running metrics at an accessible price point. It's an excellent choice for dedicated runners prioritising core functionalities.

Editor's take
The Garmin Forerunner 165 010-02863-20 positions itself as an accessible yet feature-rich GPS smartwatch, specifically tailored for runners and active individuals. It builds upon Garmin's strong legacy in sports technology, offering a compelling blend of performance tracking and daily utility. This model is a solid entry point into the Forerunner series, providing essential metrics without overwhelming the user.
A standout feature is its vibrant AMOLED display, which offers superior clarity and readability compared to traditional LCDs, making data glanceable even during intense workouts. Coupled with the reliable built-in GPS for accurate pace and distance tracking, and wrist-based heart rate monitoring, the Forerunner 165 delivers robust performance data. The impressive 11-day battery life in smartwatch mode further enhances its appeal, reducing the frequency of charging.
While the Forerunner 165 excels in core running and fitness tracking, it lacks some of the advanced physiological metrics or mapping capabilities found in higher-end Garmin models. Users seeking multi-sport profiles beyond running and cycling, or those requiring detailed topographic maps for trail adventures, might find its feature set somewhat limited. The fibre-reinforced polymer case is durable but doesn't offer the premium feel of metal cases.
Ultimately, the Garmin Forerunner 165 is an excellent choice for dedicated runners or fitness enthusiasts who prioritise accurate tracking, a bright display, and long battery life in a lightweight package. For those who need more advanced navigation or multi-sport functionality, exploring models like the Forerunner 265 or Fenix series might be a more suitable alternative, albeit at a higher price point.
