Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the H-31 movement and what is the chronograph's maximum timing duration?
The Hamilton Calibre H-31 is a precise Swiss automatic movement, typically regulated to within a few seconds per day. The chronograph function can measure elapsed time up to 30 minutes, tracked by the subdial at the 3 o'clock position.
What do the two subdials on the dial indicate?
This watch features a two-subdial, or 'bicompax', layout. The subdial at the 9 o'clock position displays the running seconds for standard timekeeping. The subdial at the 3 o'clock position is the 30-minute counter for the chronograph.
What is the power reserve of the H-31 automatic movement?
The H-31 automatic calibre boasts an extended power reserve of approximately 60 hours. This means a fully wound watch can run for about two and a half days without being worn or manually wound, offering excellent convenience.
With 100m water resistance, can I swim with this watch?
A water resistance rating of 100 metres (10 bar) means the watch is suitable for swimming and snorkelling, but not for high-impact water sports or scuba diving. Always ensure the crown and chronograph pushers are fully secured before any contact with water.
How will the 40mm case size fit on an average wrist?
The 40mm case diameter is a versatile and classic size that fits well on most men's wrists, typically ranging from 6.5 to 7.5 inches in circumference. Its moderate size makes it suitable for both formal and casual wear without feeling oversized.
How often does an automatic chronograph like this need to be serviced?
For an automatic chronograph movement like the Calibre H-31, a full service is generally recommended every 5 to 7 years to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, lubrication, and checking seals for water resistance.
Editor's take
The Hamilton American Classic Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 is a compelling reinterpretation of a 1960s racing chronograph, perfectly suited for enthusiasts who appreciate vintage aesthetics with modern reliability. This timepiece, part of Hamilton's esteemed American Classic collection, offers a sophisticated yet sporty appeal, making it a versatile choice for daily wear or special occasions. Its balanced proportions and classic dial layout evoke a strong sense of nostalgia without compromising on contemporary performance.
Underneath its elegant facade, the Intra-Matic Auto Chrono is powered by a robust Swiss automatic movement, providing the precision and functionality expected from a high-quality chronograph. The 40mm stainless steel case, paired with a domed sapphire crystal, ensures both durability and excellent legibility, reminiscent of vintage acrylic crystals but with superior scratch resistance. With 100 metres of water resistance, this watch is well-equipped for everyday splashes and occasional swims, adding to its practical appeal.
While the watch excels in design and mechanical integrity, some purists might find the lack of an exhibition case back a minor drawback, as it conceals the intricate automatic movement. Additionally, the tang buckle, while classic, might not offer the same level of micro-adjustment or security as a deployant clasp, especially for those with very specific fit preferences. However, these are minor considerations given the overall quality and value proposition.
This Hamilton chronograph is an excellent choice for collectors seeking a vintage-inspired piece that doesn't require the delicate handling of an actual vintage watch. It appeals to individuals who value heritage, a reliable automatic chronograph function, and a versatile design that transitions seamlessly from the office to a weekend drive. For those considering alternatives, other brands like Tissot or Certina offer compelling automatic chronographs, though perhaps with a different aesthetic focus.
