Description
The Rado Captain Cook is a green dial automatic diver with a nautical character, suited to anyone who wants a capable everyday watch with a clear dive heritage. It sits on the wrist as a 42 mm round case with a date display.
The case is made of stainless steel and covered by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Inside runs a Swiss automatic movement, and the listing states water resistance of 300 m, which is generous for swimming and snorkelling.
The standout detail is the 80 hour power reserve, so the watch keeps running through a weekend off the wrist. It also comes with several interchangeable straps, including a steel bracelet, green leather and green NATO, which lets you change its mood from dressier to sporty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim and snorkel with my Rado Captain Cook?
Yes for both. The listing gives 200 m in the specification table and 300 m in the bullet points, which is well beyond swimming and snorkelling needs. Rinse it with fresh water after the sea and keep the crown fully screwed in before getting wet.
Will a 42 mm case fit my 7 inch wrist?
A 42 mm round case with a 20 mm lug width suits wrists of roughly 6.5 to 8 inches. At 12.1 mm thick it sits fairly tall, so a shirt cuff may need to be a little loose to slide over the Captain Cook.
How long does it run if I leave it off for the weekend?
The Swiss automatic movement has an 80 hour power reserve, so it should keep running for over three days off the wrist. Wear it for a while on Monday and the Captain Cook is ready for daily use again.
Which straps come with it and can I change them?
The listing mentions several interchangeable options: a silver stainless steel bracelet, green leather and green NATO. The 20 mm lug width makes swapping simple, so you can go from smart to casual in a few minutes using a spring bar tool.
How does it differ from a standard black diver?
The green dial, nautical theme and anti-reflective sapphire crystal give it a more distinctive look, and the 80 hour reserve is longer than many rivals. If you prefer something understated, a black dial diver is the alternative.
How often should the Captain Cook be serviced?
As a general rule, an automatic watch like this benefits from servicing roughly every five years, with the gaskets and water resistance checked more often if you swim regularly. Daily wear helps keep the movement lubricated.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook revives a nautical diver line and here appears in a green dial version aimed at wearers who want a modern, colourful diver without moving into luxury pricing. It is a 42 mm round case with a date display, sized for most wrists.
The headline is the 80 hour power reserve of the Swiss automatic movement, which means the watch survives a long weekend on the table and still keeps time on Monday. The case is stainless steel under an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a hard-wearing combination for daily use.
The caveat is size and weight: the listing shows a 12.1 mm case thickness, so it sits proud under a tight cuff. Water resistance is stated as 200 m in the specification table and 300 m in the bullet points, so check the caseback before deep dives. The sheer number of strap options also means more to store and keep tidy.
It suits buyers who want a green diver with a strong power reserve and flexible straps, from the steel bracelet to a NATO. If the budget stretches elsewhere, a Tissot Seastar or a Certina DS Action offers a comparable dive-watch package.
