Description
The Rado Captain Cook Open Heart is a Swiss automatic watch for people who want a diver with a modern ceramic look. Its green dial and rotating anchor give it a distinct character on the wrist.
The round case is made of high-tech ceramic and measures 43 mm across, with a thickness of 16.2 mm. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is rated water resistant to 300 m. Power comes from a Swiss automatic movement, and the lug width is 21 mm.
The open heart dial lets you see part of the movement at work, while the ceramic bracelet with foldover clasp keeps the look consistent from case to wrist. Glow-in-the-dark details help with legibility in low light, which suits daily wear as well as time in the water.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep can I take the Rado Captain Cook in the water?
The Captain Cook is rated to 300 m, which is enough for swimming, snorkelling and recreational diving. The rating is a lab figure, so in daily use it covers showers and pool time comfortably. Keep the crown fully pushed in whenever the watch gets wet.
Is this watch too big for my 7 inch wrist?
The case is 43 mm across and 16.2 mm thick, so it wears large. On a 7 inch wrist it will look bold but workable, with a 21 mm lug width. Slimmer wrists may find it tall, so try it on first if you can.
What movement does the Captain Cook use and can I see it?
It uses a Swiss automatic movement, so it winds from wrist motion and needs no battery. The open heart dial shows part of the movement at work, which many owners enjoy. Wearing it daily keeps it running steadily.
Is it suitable for daily wear or only for diving?
The Captain Cook works well as a daily watch thanks to its sapphire crystal and ceramic case, which resist scratches. The green dial and glow-in-the-dark details stay readable in low light. It is a sport-leaning piece but fine for casual and smart casual outfits.
How does the Captain Cook ceramic differ from a steel diver?
Compared with a steel diver, the ceramic case and bracelet resist scratching better and keep their finish longer. The trade-off is that sizing the bracelet is less flexible. For a lighter, easier-to-adjust alternative, a steel model is the usual choice.
How often should I service this automatic watch?
Automatic watches generally benefit from a service every five years or so, depending on use. For a diver rated to 300 m, a yearly water resistance check at a service centre is sensible, especially if you swim often.
Editor's take
Rado has spent decades building its identity around scratch-resistant materials, and the Captain Cook Open Heart carries that approach into a diver format. It pairs a green dial with a rotating anchor and a high-tech ceramic case, aimed at buyers who want a Swiss diver that looks different from the usual steel field.
The case is 43 mm across and 16.2 mm thick, with a sapphire crystal over the dial and a rating of 300 m water resistance. The movement is a Swiss automatic, and the open heart window shows part of it at work. That combination gives the watch real substance for swimming and diving, not just a styled look.
The main trade-off is size. At 16.2 mm thick, it will sit tall on slimmer wrists and may catch under tight cuffs. The ceramic bracelet with foldover clasp also means sizing is less flexible than on a steel bracelet, so check the fit with a retailer before buying.
It suits someone who wants a modern, hard-wearing diver and appreciates seeing the movement through the dial. If you prefer a lighter case and easier bracelet adjustment, a steel automatic diver at a similar price is the sensible alternative.
