Description
The Rado Captain Cook is a Swiss automatic chronograph for men who want a robust steel sports watch with a distinctive green dial. It combines a 43 mm case with a bracelet that wears comfortably day to day.
The case and bracelet are stainless steel, protected by a sapphire crystal. The Swiss automatic movement carries an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring and delivers a 59-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated at 300 m, which covers swimming and snorkelling.
The green gradient dial gives the watch character without losing legibility, and the foldover clasp keeps the bracelet secure. It suits daily wear as readily as weekend sport, with a 14.8 mm case thickness and 21 mm lug width for easy strap swaps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with the Rado Captain Cook?
Yes, within reason. The Captain Cook is rated to 300 m, so swimming, snorkelling and showering are fine. Keep the crown fully pushed in and avoid operating the chronograph pushers underwater. Gaskets age, so a periodic pressure test is sensible if you swim regularly.
Is it too big for a 6.5 inch wrist?
It is a large watch at 43 mm across and 14.8 mm thick, so on a 6.5 inch wrist it will wear prominently. The bracelet is substantial too. Try it on before buying if you have a smaller wrist, or consider a slimmer chronograph.
How long does it run when I take it off?
This Captain Cook has a 59-hour power reserve, so it should keep running through a weekend without wear. If it stops, wind the crown a few turns or wear it for a while before setting the time and date.
What is the Nivachron hairspring for?
Nivachron is an antimagnetic alloy used for the hairspring. Everyday magnets in phones, laptops and bag clasps can disturb a standard hairspring and make a watch gain or lose time. This one resists that far better, which suits daily carry.
How does it compare with a quartz chronograph?
The Captain Cook is a Swiss automatic, so it needs no battery and has a mechanical feel, but it costs more and needs periodic servicing. A quartz chronograph is usually cheaper and more accurate, whilst this one offers sapphire crystal and 300 m resistance.
How often should it be serviced?
Mechanical watches like this generally benefit from servicing every five years or so, depending on use. If you swim often, ask the service centre to check the gaskets and pressure test water resistance at the same time.
Editor's take
Rado's Captain Cook line carries the brand's dive-watch heritage, and this green-dial chronograph brings it to a Swiss automatic chronograph format for men who want a sporty steel watch with presence. The gradient green dial is the main visual hook.
The Nivachron antimagnetic hairspring is the most meaningful technical detail here, as it resists magnetic fields from phones and bags better than a conventional hairspring. The 59-hour power reserve means it will survive a weekend off the wrist, and the sapphire crystal protects against scratches.
The trade-off is size. At 43 mm across and 14.8 mm thick, it wears large and tall, and smaller wrists may find it dominant. The stainless steel bracelet with foldover clasp adds weight, so those who prefer lighter watches should try a strap on the 21 mm lugs.
It suits buyers who want a Swiss chronograph with a real 300 m rating and a colourful dial. For a similar budget, look at other Swiss automatic chronographs with slimmer cases if comfort matters more than presence.
