Description
The Rado Captain Cook Open Heart is a men's Swiss automatic watch with a green dial and a vintage dive look. It suits anyone who wants a sporty everyday watch with a visible movement and a distinctive ceramic case.
The 42 mm case combines high-tech ceramic with stainless steel and measures about 12 mm thick. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial, and the Swiss automatic movement is water resistant to 20 bar, or 200 m. The silver rice bead bracelet closes with a fold-over clasp.
What stands out is the 80-hour power reserve, which lets the watch rest over a long weekend and still keep time. White Super Luminova indexes and a date window at 3 o'clock keep the green dial easy to read, so the watch works for office days, travel and weekend swimming alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with the Rado Captain Cook Open Heart?
Yes for swimming and snorkelling, as the Captain Cook Open Heart is rated to 20 bar, or 200 m. That covers daily showers and pool or sea swimming. For deeper dives, use a purpose-built dive instrument and have gaskets checked regularly.
How long will it run if I leave it on the desk?
The Swiss automatic movement has an 80-hour power reserve, so it will usually keep running for over three days off the wrist. A full weekend is no problem. After longer rests, wind the crown or give it a few shakes before setting.
Will it fit a 7 inch wrist?
A 42 mm case with an 18 mm lug width generally suits wrists of about 6.5 to 8 inches. At roughly 12 mm thick it sits fairly tall, so try it on a smaller wrist. The rice bead bracelet may need links removed.
How does it differ from a standard steel diver?
The Captain Cook Open Heart mixes high-tech ceramic with stainless steel, adds a sapphire crystal coated on both sides and an 80-hour reserve. Compared with a plain steel diver it resists scratches better, though a rotating bezel buyer may want another alternative.
Does it need a battery or regular service?
It is automatic, so no battery is needed in normal use; the wrist motion winds it. Service is generally advised every five years or so for lubrication, with gasket checks sooner if you swim often, to keep the 200 m rating reliable.
Is it suitable for everyday office wear?
Yes, the green dial and ceramic and steel case look smart enough for the office, and the date at 3 o'clock is practical. At about 12 mm thick it may sit tall under tight cuffs, but it suits daily sport and casual wear well.
Editor's take
Rado has long been known for hard materials, and the Captain Cook Open Heart reworks the vintage diver look in a high-tech ceramic and stainless steel case. At 42 mm it sits in a sensible size for most wrists, and the green dial gives it a clear identity among modern divers.
Inside is a Swiss automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve, a useful figure for anyone who rotates several watches. The sapphire crystal carries anti-reflective coating on both sides, which helps with glare, and Super Luminova indexes keep the dial readable in low light. Water resistance of 200 m is ample for swimming and snorkelling.
The trade-offs are modest. At roughly 12 mm the case is thick for a dress sleeve, and the rice bead bracelet with fold-over clasp is stylish but offers no mentioned micro-adjustment, so fit on a wrist between sizes may take some care. The listing also names no calibre.
It suits buyers who want a Swiss automatic diver with a distinctive material story and a good power reserve. Those who value a more traditional steel diver with a rotating bezel might compare it with other Swiss divers at similar prices.
