Description
The Rado DiaStar Original is a women's automatic watch built around an oval gold dial with a crosshair face style. It suits anyone who wants a compact, classic piece with a mechanical movement rather than a battery.
The case is stainless steel, measuring 30mm across and 11mm thick, and it is topped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Inside sits a Swiss automatic movement, and the watch is rated water resistant to 100 metres. The stainless steel bracelet closes with a foldover clasp and fits 16mm lugs.
What stands out is the combination of the gold dial and matching gold bracelet tone with a sapphire crystal, a pairing that keeps the watch looking clean over years of wear. At 100 metres of water resistance it copes easily with daily wear, hand washing and rain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with the Rado DiaStar Original?
The DiaStar Original is rated to 100 metres, which generally covers showers, rain and light swimming. For regular pool sessions, keep the crown fully pushed in and rinse the bracelet afterwards. Frequent hot water or sauna use is best avoided, since heat can stress the gaskets over time.
Will a 30mm watch fit my wrist?
At 30mm across and 11mm thick with 16mm lugs, this watch generally suits small to medium wrists comfortably. The foldover clasp has no micro-adjustment, so the bracelet may need links added or removed by a jeweller for a precise fit on your wrist.
Is it suitable for daily wear?
Yes for most days. The sapphire crystal resists scratches from keys and desks, and the stainless steel case and bracelet handle daily knocks well. As an automatic, it runs best when worn regularly, so it suits someone who wears it most days rather than occasionally.
How does it compare with a quartz watch of this size?
A quartz watch needs a battery change every couple of years, while this Swiss automatic runs on wrist motion and needs a periodic service instead. Quartz is usually cheaper and more accurate; the DiaStar Original appeals if you value a mechanical movement.
How often does the DiaStar Original need service?
Automatic watches generally benefit from servicing every five years or so, including cleaning, lubrication and a water resistance test. Since this one is rated to 100 metres, having the gaskets checked at service keeps that rating reliable for daily showers and swims.
Who is this watch suitable for?
It is made for women who want a compact gold-toned automatic with a recognisable oval face. It works as a daily dress watch and also as a gift for someone who appreciates mechanical watches and sapphire crystal durability.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar Original is the brand's best-known design language shrunk to a 30mm women's format, and it appeals to buyers who want a compact automatic with real character. The oval gold dial with its crosshair layout gives it a recognisable, jewellery-like face.
The core is a Swiss automatic movement behind a sapphire crystal, which is the practical heart of the watch. Sapphire is what keeps a polished, gold-toned dial looking clean over years of daily wear, and the stainless steel case gives it solid backing at 11mm thick.
The trade-off is size and water rating. At 30mm the watch sits small on larger wrists, and 100 m of water resistance suits showers and splashes rather than serious swimming sessions. The foldover clasp on the bracelet is secure but offers no micro-adjustment, so sizing relies on link count.
It makes sense for someone who wants a mechanical dress-leaning watch without a battery to replace. Shoppers who prefer a larger case might look at unisex 34mm automatics from other Swiss brands at a similar level.
