How does the automatic movement of this watch work, and does it require a battery?
The Bulova Sutton 97A138 features an automatic movement, meaning it is self-winding. It powers itself through the natural motion of your wrist, so it never requires a battery. Consistent wear keeps it charged.

Editor's take
The Bulova Sutton 97A138 positions itself as an accessible entry into the world of mechanical horology, specifically for those who appreciate the visual spectacle of an open-heart dial. This timepiece, part of Bulova's Classic collection, offers a blend of traditional aesthetics with a modern twist, making it suitable for both formal and smart-casual settings. Its 43mm stainless steel case provides a substantial wrist presence, appealing to men who prefer a larger, more assertive watch.
At its core, the Sutton 97A138 features a reliable automatic movement that is self-winding, drawing power from the wearer's natural motion. This eliminates the need for battery replacements, a significant convenience for daily wear. The white skeleton dial is the star of the show, meticulously designed to reveal the intricate gears and springs, protected by a domed mineral crystal that adds a vintage touch while offering scratch resistance. The exhibition case-back further enhances this mechanical transparency, allowing for appreciation of the movement from both sides.
While the 30-metre water resistance makes this watch suitable for everyday splashes and light rain, it is not designed for swimming or diving. Enthusiasts seeking a more robust, adventure-ready timepiece might find this limitation a point of consideration. Furthermore, while the automatic movement offers the charm of traditional watchmaking, it may not provide the pinpoint accuracy of a quartz counterpart without regular wear or a watch winder.
Ultimately, the Bulova Sutton 97A138 is an excellent choice for individuals looking to own their first mechanical watch with a distinctive aesthetic. It caters to those who value craftsmanship and the visible mechanics of timekeeping over extreme durability or high-performance features. For a similar price point, one might consider a quartz chronograph for greater functionality or a simpler dress watch for a more understated elegance, but few offer the visual intrigue of this skeleton dial at this price.
