Description
The Rado DiaStar Original Open Heart is a women's Swiss automatic watch built around the brand's well-known scratch-resistant design language. It suits wearers who want a compact, distinctive mechanical watch with a purple dial and a visible movement.
The case is stainless steel, measures 30mm across and 11mm thick, and sits on an 18mm stainless steel bracelet closed by a foldover clasp. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is water resistant to 100 metres, which covers swimming and showering without worry.
The open heart dial is the feature that sets it apart, letting the owner see part of the automatic movement at work. With its silver-tone bracelet and oval dial styling, it works as an everyday piece that still feels dressy enough for evenings and occasions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Rado DiaStar Original in the shower or pool?
With 100 m water resistance, the DiaStar Original Open Heart handles showers, pool swimming and splashes comfortably. Keep the crown pushed in fully before contact with water. Hot water and steam can stress the gaskets over time, so avoid long hot showers and saunas.
Will a 30mm watch fit my wrist?
The DiaStar Original has a 30mm case and an 18mm lug width, so it suits small to average wrists. Most women find it sits neatly on a wrist of roughly 14 to 17 cm, though the bracelet links may need adjusting at a jeweller.
Is it practical for everyday wear?
Yes for most days. The sapphire crystal resists scratches, the stainless steel case and bracelet handle daily knocks, and the foldover clasp keeps it secure. At 11mm thick it is a little tall, so check it slides under fitted cuffs.
How does it differ from a quartz watch of similar size?
The Swiss automatic movement runs from wrist motion instead of a battery, and the open heart dial shows part of it working. Compared with quartz it needs periodic servicing rather than battery changes, and it is usually less accurate.
Does it need a battery change?
No, it is automatic, so there is no battery. Wearing it regularly keeps it wound, and if it sits unworn for a few days it may stop and need winding by hand or a few hours on the wrist. Service is typically advised every several years.
Who is this Rado suitable for, and what are the alternatives?
It suits women who like distinctive design, a visible movement and a compact case. If you prefer a classic round dial, small Swiss automatics from Tissot or Hamilton are worth comparing.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line dates back to the 1960s and built the brand's reputation for scratch-resistant watches, and this Original Open Heart carries that heritage into a small women's automatic. At 30mm it is aimed squarely at slimmer wrists and at buyers who prefer a mechanical watch over quartz.
The headline feature is the Swiss automatic movement, shown through the open heart section of the purple dial. Protection comes from a sapphire crystal over a stainless steel case, which suits a piece meant for daily wear and a 100 m water resistance rating.
There are trade-offs. A 30mm case with 11mm thickness is a compact, fairly tall shape, and an oval dial will not please everyone. The stated spec does not include a calibre name, so anyone who cares about movement lineage should ask the seller before buying.
It suits collectors of Rado design and anyone who wants a distinctive mechanical watch with a foldover clasp bracelet. For a similar budget, look at smaller Swiss automatics from Tissot or Hamilton if a more traditional round dial matters more.
